Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And if this plant is going to grow too big? I had my heart set on yuccas until I read the post by Fu saying how big it can grow and how invasive the roots are. I am hoping this one will be more palm than yuccas. Thanks people. Re: Help identify this plant 4Mar 30, 2013 8:35 am it getting bigger won't be a problem in your life time. Re: Help identify this plant 5Mar 30, 2013 12:36 pm They grow very slowly. If you are in WA, there a quite a few types of these. Kingias are another type. These plants, Xanthorrhoea (Balga) and along with the amazing Nuytsia (WA Christmas tree), are considered one of the most sacred totems for the Nyoongar culture. They are both being cleared from the landscape like they were people emptying from a sports stadium. Thankfully a tiny amount of these plants are being salvaged by a couple of businesses. http://www.grasstrees.com.au and my favourite http://www.replants.com Many of those we see have been growing since 1500. what was European culture doing back then? Now we clear them with no thought at what they have seen in their lives. A few have been known to be older by several hundred years. Pretty sure East coast species and genus grow faster but equally as beautiful. I don't recomend people burn them in their gardens as the risk of that explosion of fire spreading to your home is far too great. A garden hose will not come even close to controlling the flames. Keep them tidy with a chain saw up the trunk and some black acrylic paint to get the trunk dark like it has been burnt. The flower shoots are a rich source of nutrition and taste a bit like cucumber, but better. The leaves were used for bedding. They have a spiritual presence in any landscape, especially in its natural habitat. Why people would rather a bloody pest infested Cordyline or Yucca than one of these is beyond me. 0 4690 Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 7925 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain. Do you have access to NCC Part 2 or can you download it? I can email you a copy… 10 12462 |
