Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 15, 2013 7:54 pm Hi all, I'm building on a slope (higher at front) however my land was filled approx 700mm while my neighbours cut down theirs. I have to do some retaining walls but I do not know where is the best location. I have spoken to a few concreters and fencers that do retaining wall. My initial plan was to put the retaining wall in near my fence and one at the rear to create a stepdown garden. (see drawing). However, today, a fencer told me is better to put the walls right after the concrete ends. He said this is better for the concrete. But the thing is by doing so I have to leave a gap between wall and fence empty otherwise the soil will cause damage to fence in future as what he told me. I find that this method make it looks weird. Can anyone advise me here or may have a better idea? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Where to place retaining wall? See drawing 2Mar 18, 2013 4:25 pm Trying to follow what your saying, hope this helps, it sounds like you need to also retain the soil from the fence in effect creating narrow planter boxes along your fence? You only need to keep the soil off the paling or base board (timber fence) depending how high you need to go, some H4 timber against the fence will do the job of protecting it or even root barrier. I have now decided to put the retaining wall at the fence and put concrete all the way to the retaining wall. If i want some greens in future, i will use timber planter box or pots have some flowers Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
