Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 09, 2013 11:45 pm Hi, I found a nice house ticking off all our requirements, but one; a level garden. The "garden" is more like a lovely forest and is about 40% steep. I would be happy with the forest, however I would love to level out at least some area to have a place we can sit and play footy with the kids. Does anybody have experience in projects like that? How complicated would it be? Do I need approval from the council? How much does it cost roughly? Any advice would be much appreciated! Many thanks in advance Re: Garden on a scarp? 2Mar 10, 2013 6:52 am You would need to build a retaining wall with the height being dependant on the area that you need flat. If the wall is more than 900mm high you will need a council approval (which will require an engineered design) This link gives some more information http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=1585 The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Garden on a scarp? 3Mar 20, 2013 9:15 pm On a 40% gradient, I'd be getting some engineering advice for any retaining wall. Reminds me of a well known landscape garden on the Yarra near Warburton. A network of paths and terraces like a rice paddy. Kids love running around burning off some energy. It made the whole area accessable rather than unused space. Maybe look at doing a staggered terrace the main playing area with a low retaining wall and a series of steped walls to lessen the visual impact of one really high wall. An area as small as 60m2 is ok enough for a bit of a kick but you maybe thinking of a much larger area for kicking the footy. Cost would be pretty high if your not careful.
