Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 09, 2013 9:34 pm Hello, Our apricot tree which we bought bare rooted and planted in a pot (about 60cm) has extended it's roots out of the pot and into the ground. Need advice on what to do please. We are extremely new to gardening and don't have much of an idea! Wanted to plant in a pot as we wanted to give us the option of being able to move the fruit tree with us when and if we decided to move. Thanks in advance! Re: Apricot tree help please! 2Mar 11, 2013 8:10 am Hi, Sounds like you need a bigger pot! Some apricots have been breed to remain small, if you have one of these varieties than a smallish pot will still suffice. Ideally wait till winter when the tree is dormant and simply cut off those roots that have escaped, re-pot the tree in a larger pot and then either put the pot on a small stand, or in a shallow tray to reduce the risk of the same problem occurring in the future. Re: Apricot tree help please! 3Mar 14, 2013 9:20 pm Thanks Online Gardener AU... I will wait until Winter, do you think it will harm the tree if I wait? Appreciate the reply Also, when should I be pruning the fruit trees? sorry for silly questions Re: Apricot tree help please! 4Mar 21, 2013 12:11 pm A pot size of around that of a half wine barrel or some 3/4 it's size is ideal for most fruit trees. They can't grow in them for ever though, so sooner or later it needs to come out and have the roots pruned every 3 or 4 years. I use a timber saw (a very cheap one) and it works a treat. Cut the roots into a square shape so they aren't as likely to coil round. Repot using CocoPeat instead of potting mix. Works much more efficiently. Only use control release fertilisers on it. (I never use any fertilisers) No need to buy Fruit tree specific fertilisers. General purpose is fine. I use rock minerals, molasses, blood and bone, worm wee, fish emulsions and raw tree mulches in the top of the pots to feed them. Oh and choose a pot that doesn't close up at the top. Otherwise once the root mass fills the pot you won't get it back out the narrower hole. I use rubbish bins, plastic tubs, all sorts of things to pot my fruit trees in. It doesn't matter what material it's made from, as long as it can drain water and hold soil it will work. Re: Apricot tree help please! 5Mar 21, 2013 12:13 pm For pruning, it's normally when it has lost it's leaves. There might be done good info on it here: petercoppin.com Check the fact sheets.
