Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 14, 2013 2:15 pm Hi There, My Sir walter has really struggled in this hot weather. IT started off by the blades of grass curl up and go a sort of greyish colour, which i read was lack of water, or poor soil etc. Anyway, i was away for a few days and couldnt water it so now i have a huge patch of dead grass. It is straw like and just flake when touching it. I am planning on top dressing the lawn with an Organic Top Dressing (Which is Sand, Soil, Duck Manure). I think this should promote better soil in case what i have now is no good. Also, what should i do with the straw like patches? Should i be cutting it out ? or should i just leave it for the other grass to grow over it? Re: Sir Walter dead because of Hot weather 2Jan 14, 2013 5:03 pm Doubt its actually dead after a few days more like dormant (unless its only a few months old??). It will re-shoot green leaf from the stolons (runners) that are there once you give it a few drinks to wake it up. Water it deeply, maybe some seasol and a wetting agent then later rake out the dead leaf once it starts to green up. Re: Sir Walter dead because of Hot weather 3Jan 15, 2013 7:59 am those patches are definately dead leaf as when i touch it.. they just crumble... i do see a couple of new growths popping out.. but should i remove all of the straw like areas to encourage the runners to spread? Re: Sir Walter dead because of Hot weather 4Jan 15, 2013 8:55 am Hi tikelz. I had the same issue with my Buffalo grass where we mowed it too low just before we had a string of hot days, and so a lot of patches turned to straw. We didn't fertilize or dress it with anything - we just gave it a thorough hand watering (both front and back lawns; there were lots of patches) twice a day for 2-3 weeks. The grass around the patches was still healthy and so it eventually grew back in. It looks great now! Buffalo loves heat and it loves water, so give it both If you look at the last few posts on my thread (address in signature below), I actually have comparison photos for the grass. Good luck!
