Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 28, 2012 8:04 pm Hi there, we've just bought a house and are looking at re-doing our lawn. The soil is very good, it's sandy loam and it's soft to a depth of 1200mm. It's full of weeds, and what looks like buffalo grass to me. Some of the lawn is in good condition, but there is heaps of dead grass and some yellow bits throughout. We're thinking of just re-doing from scratch, using seed. I demolished a large shed (almost the size of a 1.5 car garage). I sowed some seed and it took up pretty well, and even after 1 month it's in good condition. I used Brunnings seed which I won't do again, I'll spend more on Munnns... image below. Would a rotary hoe similar to the one below do fine? It's pretty cheap. http://www.betterrentals.com.au/hire/hy ... otary-hoe/ Any tips? Our backyard is below. http://postimage.org/image/y5dt0kxkh/ Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 3Dec 28, 2012 8:47 pm suh That first link doesn't show the rotary hoe only contact numbers. Hmm, should be a picture on the right side http://www.betterrentals.com.au/hire/hy ... otary-hoe/ same as this one http://redroo.com/commercial_environmen ... rotary-hoe Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 5Dec 28, 2012 8:55 pm Hi jonas. I tried creating a bit of a lawn from seed, as we're on an acre and thought it might save us some money. I think the biggest problem is that you can't really use the lawn while the grass is growing. It didn't matter too much for us with the patch we tried, as it was out the front, but it looks like you have kiddies that would like to use the lawn? Maybe you could do it in stages? We ended up going with turf in the end. . . so much easier. Could you try just aerating the soil and chucking on some organic fertilizers (maybe some weedkiller) and see what you can do with what you've already got? Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 6Dec 28, 2012 9:31 pm Probably 50% of it is weeds... and a mix of various grasses so the other problem if we tried to manage with the lawn we've got is finding the e The brunnings brand I used was evergreen, and very bright, which looks odd and in the patches it just looks strange compared to the colour of the older grass. Though it grew really well. It only has a germination rate of 60% where as the Munns has 90 to 95% so we'll see how that goes. I stepped on mine a fair bit when watering and it seems to be okay. We have a big backyard and it would cost too much for turf. Also I like the challenge of creating from scratch. We will have a big vegie patch 12 m x 2m behind the cubby. We can do it in patches to make it easier I guess. Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 7Dec 28, 2012 11:38 pm How big is your yard? Sq metres? We have a big yard too and laid sir Walter. So glad we did, we love it, well worth the money for us. So glad we did, we love it, well worth the money for us. The grass area is around 225 square metres. Our block is 585sqm. Is Sir Walter buffalo grass? My sister got that put it in her place and it's not for us, too scratchy and rough on the feet... I like the Fescue style of grasses better. And 25kg of seed is around $300, so much cheaper than turf at around $1300. If money wasn't an issue, I'd probably get Fescue turf laid. Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 9Dec 29, 2012 11:21 am try sapphire if SW is too hard and scratchy for you. there are lots of different buffalo grasses. not all are scratchy. Are you sure your sisters grass was the sir walter type? The people across from us have just laid shredded lawn. I'm not sure what sort. Hopefully SW or Sapphire or EZ or nara. This is over an 1 acre. They did a lot of soil improving. adding organic soil in before planting. Took a number of days as you can imagine. I'm glad I'm not them but each to their own I guess. Most seeded lawns if not all are not usually very successful. Have a look at the stickies for lawn advice. I'd probably wait until you can afford to have it laid, regardless of the type you choose. We laid 650 sq metres of lawn and it was worth every cent. You'll spend a lot of time and money trying to grow from seed. Just my opinion though Re: creating a new lawn from seed over a large area 12Apr 29, 2013 9:16 pm We are on 2 acres and have the same dilemma. Will probably go for turf ( Sir Walter ) in front of the house at first, and then do the back yard a bit later if the front is successful . A few bags would cost you under $1,000 and probably do 2 acres. Just takes time CDC Housing Code 3 When to apply Floor Area external face of wall vs Gross Floor Area internal face of wall.
