Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 21, 2012 6:40 pm Here’s the reason your dog won’t get a sunburnt bum… While I was cleaning up the doggy dodos in the garden I noticed it was white and left stains everywhere. We had obviously changed to the chicken variety of his favourite canned doggy food. Some chicken flavours have a white chunk that is made to look like chicken by the addition of titanium dioxide – now that’s the stuff that they put in PVC windows to protect them from the sun, it’s used in paint, cosmetics and sunscreens. In doggy food, it goes straight through your pooch and comes out the same way it went in- WHITE. If you are sick of the white patches left on your lawn by Fido, avoid the chicken flavour. Ed Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 2Dec 21, 2012 7:19 pm That, or dont feed your dog canned food.. Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 3Dec 21, 2012 8:59 pm I'm not surprised. As it turns out, a lot of the readily available dog food is rubbish and filled with 'fillers' such as corn meal and grains which dogs can't digest properly. I found out recently that the cause of my dogs itching and biting was the corn meal in her food. I had her on a 'premium dog food' as well. I've recently changed to another brand that doesn't contain corn meal and she's much better for it. I never feed her can food though, just dry food/kibble and some raw meat on the weekend. If I didn't work full time I would probably feed her a completely raw diet. Many years ago, I used to work for one of the larger brands of canned pet food, and I can say, they went to great efforts to make the food balanced and wholesome, and it was all thoroughly cooked until it was safe, they also added vitamins and minerals.... In fact where chicken was used, if it was out of the coldstore for more than 20 minutes it was binned, cooked stuff was binned after 40 minutes. So IMO, canned pet food is probably more wholesome than some meat pies... It's bad marketing to kill off your customer base... Plus, if the food is off, it's impossible to process in automated equipment, as the cans would be bloated. Half the crap they put it dog food (including premium) is crap.. Dogs don't need vegetables. I also find it cheaper feeding raw! and my dogs love it. And the vets have also mentioned my 9yr old has the best teeth around (canned food is not good for teeth) Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 12Dec 23, 2012 5:50 pm Echo2k3 I feed raw to my 2. And the vets have also mentioned my 9yr old has the best teeth around (canned food is not good for teeth) My girl (American Staffordshire Terrier) is on dry food and some raw food. Canned food doesn't agree with her stomach, it goes straight through her and she loses a lot of weight. I've recently put her on a new-ish dry food brand - Black Hawk. She seems to be doing really well on it. Her coat is so soft, she's maintaining her weight and her skin has improved so she's not scratching anymore. I'd definitely recommend it as a dry food. I agree re vegetables etc. Dogs really only need meat, organs etc. Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 13Dec 23, 2012 6:44 pm My friend has a partly '"vegetarian" dog. She mostly gives her oatmeal with raw eggs and cooked vegies, sometimes it's egg and rice, and raw meat only twice a week. Her dog is in excellent condition with a beautiful coat and is 11 years old. She hasn't got the terrible doggie breath my dogs have either. So imo as long as the dog is healthy and has enough protein sources from its diet there is no problem. My Rottweiler and Labrador x LOVE any offal I give them and because raw meats are so nutritious I dont feed much at all. Actually the place is run by vets and they balance the diet better than you or me. The same water is in prime steak... take out the water and you are left with a stock cube. Ed Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 18Dec 29, 2012 9:01 am Echo2k3 And vets still frown upon me when they ask what I feed my dogs when I say raw. Apparently cooked biscuits and rice are good for them. Do they say your dog is at risk, or unhealthy? I think it's all fine if your dog stays heathy... I think cooking offal & meat is wise from a disease perspective, and that is what happens with canned food, it is cooked almost to sterility, or the cans would explode! Ed Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 19Dec 29, 2012 9:15 am Yeah, strange that in the western world many dogs are better catered for foodwise than humans while in the rest of the world, they don't walk their dogs they wok 'em. Re: So, the sun shines out of your dog’s bottom… 20Dec 29, 2012 9:18 am I think a raw diet is probably the best diet for a dog.. but not everyone has the time to do that. We even tried home cooked meals for our dog but that took a lot of effort and she didn't like it. I think its important to look at the ingredients of the food and see what's in it. If I see the words 'by product' I stay away from it. Whether its the first, second or even tenth ingredient. I finally found a brand of dog food that uses all natural products no corn or grain at all (except for brown rice) and I mainly use their dry food but they have a wet food range that are stews for dogs and you can see the bits of meat, the peas and potatoes etc...
