Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 18, 2012 11:05 pm Hi I have asked this question on another forum but would love the opinion of those here on homeone. I am in the process of having a 1.8m picket front fence put up along with a picket sliding gate. One person quoted treated pine pickets and the other for cypress. Please correct me if I am wrong but I was told to stay from Cypress because they will eventually split sooner or later but the advantages is only if I want to stain them as they look better than Treated Pine. The disadvantage with Treated pine is it is reeded on one side unless I want to pay alot more to have the smooth look on both sides. Please can someone help as I need to choose which timber soon. thanks Mary Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 2Dec 19, 2012 12:44 am Cypress looks wonderful stained, much better than pine. Also cypress contains an oil which naturally repels white ants. As far as splitting, sorry, I don't know. I should imagine splitting will occur when the wood drys out completely but if it's stained properly it should preserve it??? Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 3Dec 20, 2012 10:21 pm Thanks for the reply Treeseachanger, I agree with you that cypress would look much nicer if I were to stain the pickets, however the long term maintenance of stainer/oiling the 22m pickets is something I would not look forward to do. I am still undecided in whether to paint it a dark grey colour such as monument or to stain it. Someone else mentioned that with TP that there would be knots in the timber that with time may fall out. I think I have decided on using cypress unless anyone else can persuade me otherwise. Thanks Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 4Dec 21, 2012 8:33 am I too would favour the cyprus pine option. It would look far more attractive than T/P when oiled. If you did go with the T/P and paint then you would still have to maintain it every couple of years with a fresh coat, more so if you did paint it a dark colour like monument. Good luck with your final choice Reno Girl Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 5Dec 25, 2012 8:46 am Thanks Dirkadirk I have decided to use Cypress and hopefully be able to have this fence/gate up in the very new year. Is there a stain or oil you would recommend using that well last a while without having to be done often Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 6Dec 25, 2012 10:38 am Cabots stains are good, we once bought a holiday home (cedar clad) and re-stained it. It hadn't been done for about 10 years. Of course the parts of the wood which get all direct sun needed 2 coats but the stain has lasted about 7 years. And that's in very hot wa sun. Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 7Dec 25, 2012 12:52 pm Hi Treeseachanger did you use the Cabots deck and exterior stain in the oil base or water base? To not redo in even 5 years sounds good! The front of my fence has the east sun hitting it but the inside will be west facing thanks Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 8Dec 25, 2012 5:27 pm It was the oil base, or it wouldn't have worked- as previous owner used oil. You can put oil over water based but not the other way. Went through 3 new paint brushes because the cladding is rough...your project should be a lot easier! Sorry. I've no experience of the water based one. A deck surface is quite different and would need it sooner, since it gets wear and tear, not like a fence which only has to withstand weather. Merry christmas anyway, have a good one. Re: Treated pine or Cypress pine picket fence 9Jan 24, 2013 10:14 am Hi Guys, I have just come across this thread and I hope your fence building went well Mary. I had just a couple of points to raise. Mary what you have heard about cypress splitting is correct. It does split much much easier than treated pine and you can get some very very poor quality cypress. Also im not sure where you were looking for treated pine pickets but they do come in a dressed finished all round (no ribbing/reeding). I can recommend a supplier in Sydney if you would like. These guys have always been the cheapest and excellent quality for my jobs. Cypress is also very susceptible to rot. Treated pine is not. Treated pine doesn't need staining to preserve it, however if you choose to paint it then over time it is likely to need re doing depending on your environment. There are also a number of timber stainer's that you can use on treated pine which can either enhance its natural colour or change it to an alternative look. Anyway I hope this information is helpful to you guys in the future. As I said Mary I hope you had success with your fence.
