Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 30, 2012 4:23 pm Hi all, I've seen some posts about using Mushroom compost as a base for laying turf (or not to use), but i don't seem to see some relating to the Vegetable Garden. I have just built two raised veggie garden, about 3m (l) x 1.5m (w) x 800 (h). I have half filled these with soil from around the house (new house), most of which is clay (ish) based. I was thinking for the rest of it to be filled in with Mushroom Compost and fill it to the top. Would this work for a range of Veggies to grow, or should i mix the Mushroom Compost with some soil to mix it all in and create a 'better' balance. Other options if not..... please. Re: Veg Garden and Mushroom Compost 2Oct 30, 2012 7:16 pm I sure hope it works alright because that was the first preparation I made for my new veggie patch. I researched it on Gardening Australia, and Peter Cundall reckons that with Sheep Poo was the best stuff. He added gypsum for clay soils. Re: Veg Garden and Mushroom Compost 3Oct 31, 2012 10:07 am A better balance would be best. I would add a mix of 1/4 mush compost 1/4 organic compost and 1/2 screened soil (if you have soil left over from your site use that instead). Mix it all together breaking up the clay chunks and water it well so the clay is coated with the composts. Remember that 1/2 ratio of compost will disappear over 12months dropping your soil level but with change the structure of your old clay soil for many years.
