Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 23, 2012 8:35 pm Hi all, I'm fed up with mowing my vast expanse of lawn and have decided to convert half of the backyard into a vegetable patch/orchard. I plan to have the lawn excavated and buy some raised garden beds. I was thinking of laying lilydale toppings for the pathways, but am worried about the lawn coming through - it's very invasive (kikuyu maybe?). Should I lay weeedmat down first? Is there a more sensible option? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers, Sue Re: Lilydale toppings question 2Oct 24, 2012 6:51 am i would spray first, kill any weeds lay a mat, yes, good, and then toppings. after that, just keep on top, something appears, spray it asap. cheers Re: Lilydale toppings question 3Oct 26, 2012 2:27 pm Spray weeds/grass wait for them to die. Excavate down 100mm if needed or use timber edges to contain/frame the toppings. Lay 50-75 of cheap crushed rock and compact, then lay 15-25 mm of perferred toppings and compact again. We used granetic on the Westgate pump track, and the areas that were compacted with a vibrating plate are basically completely clear of any weeds or kikiyu (which is used through Westgate Park) growing in those immediate areas. A few centimeters off line where it wasn't compacted and we're dealing with a massive weed problem. It certainly doesn't hurt to have a lining underneath, but it's difficult - it's not like you can just put one single large sheet down. As suggested by others, poisoning the grass before laying down lilydale can't hurt. There is another trick to stop Kikiyu spreading, but I'm loathed to suggest salt traps on peoples gardens - but basically we just trench a small (2-3" wide) trench of salted soil (you have to be careful not to let it mix with the rest of the garden - hence a lined trench).
