Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 21, 2012 10:34 pm I'm looking at espaliering a fig against a brick wall (slatted cover, so worst of summer sun is shaded, whilst allowing full winter sun) on my deck (Hebel, due to fire requirement). Can anyone suggest a good way to attach horizontal SS cables to the wall (I'll need at least 2 horizontal cables I think, one for the initial horizontal branch, and another further up to train the verticals), whilst keeping between 10-15cm away from the wall, and also looks good. FWIW, the fig is in a large planter, but I don't think the planter is strong enough to support a trellis. Re: Espaliering fig against wall 2Nov 22, 2012 1:13 pm If its a brick wall then the best way would be simply to drill with a masonry bit (use the hammer setting), then hammer in plastic wall plugs and screw in thick galvanised screws leaving enough standing free to attach your wires. This is not very conspicuous and the simplest approach. Re: Espaliering fig against wall 3Nov 22, 2012 10:19 pm This was my first choice; unfortunately those that I've seen are too short, with the wire ending up closer than 10cm to the wall. I suppose I can look online again to see what's out there, ideally in SS. Re: Espaliering fig against wall 4Nov 23, 2012 8:31 am You could try a S/steel supply place to see if they have anything that is stock standard but I doubt it myself. You could get something made quite easily though and any fitter & turner would be able to knock something up easily. We had to get some special brackets made for an air con unit years ago that were something similar. Basically a 150mm long 10mm S/Steel rod with an internal thread at each end. One end was screwed onto a masonry bolt that was inserted into the brickwork and we screwed a bracket to the other end. You could use an eyelet or hook for this end instead. Dig down to your footings and let the wall dry out. Clean it all well by brushing… 1 3399 6 2994 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 1333 |
