Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 15, 2012 8:01 pm hi all! So we are about 1/3 of the way through a house build and we have started looking into landscaping to be done after.... I have a question about the best order to get things done as we are having artificial turf, and a decking and we spoke to one company that does both, but when we asked the question about DIYing the deck and then having turf done they said that would be an issue for access. We have a 630sqm block. 20 metre frontage and a 3 m gap between the fence and garage so weren't thinking we would have issues with access. Basically we want to have a patio with deck under it, some screens and gates, a raised area that would be turf on top, then turf the rest. This is my basic idea of what we would like... any ideas or rcommendations on landscaping would be much appreciated... I have no idea, and all we want is a simple elegant easy care garden... and when i say easy care i mean.... like as easy as concreting the whole lot http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc439/guilty_angel13/Landscaping.jpg Jen Building with HomeGroupWA (started as Scott Park Homes ) - Grand Wisteria Check out my Build Thread!! I would get them to get the base down and done and then do the deck and then have them back to complete the artificial turf laying. Hope this helps. Re: What order to do landscaping inc artificial lawn 3Sep 15, 2012 9:50 pm Yes big help. I will enquire about this next week! I hadnt thought of asking them to do it separate Thankyou! In summer, artificial turf gets very, very hot - hotter than concrete, but that's my opinion after comparing both in full sun - and will quickly burn kitty's paws. I'm having a cat run installed the full length of one side of the house myself, and I'm going for poured concrete and then putting hammocks up the wall, and constructing boxes and "hidey holes" to then put artificial lawn on top of. Kitty can still enjoy the sensation, but it's cooler on their bodies I am not a gardener by any means, and I have no evidence to back me up, but I think you may find your house will be warmer if it is surrounded by that much artificial turf. Have you considered maybe artificial out back and real at the front, or vice versa? Just to break it up a bit. I'm a big fan of low maintenance but you could also achieve that with less grass and more plants! Just a thought Re: What order to do landscaping inc artificial lawn 8Sep 16, 2012 1:13 pm parcelona I would be hesitant to use artificial lawn throughout the whole of your cat run. Just a thought thanks parcelona! i have been considering doing a native garden, since they are the most hardy (our builder gave us a plant and it died.... I even tried to keep it alive, maybe too much love LOL) My auntie has an amazing native garden, with compacted pea gravel areas as well. But she lives in lesmurdie on a large block next to bushland so its fits in. I do love kangaroo paws so maybe that would work. perhaps the native garden at the back as the the kitties will have something to play with.... as long as its not native animals! but they shouldn't be able to get in the cat run... i have heard the turf gets hot, we were recommended using some trees for shading as well. Arg!!!! If only I could afford an apartment large enough so i didn't have to have garden! OMG! that is amazing! DP's dad is pretty handly with wood, going to have to enlist his efforts! (or at least borrow the workshop!) I was thinking of stripping the carpet off my current cat tree and putting the marine carpet on it to withstand the weather for them, but those boxes are so much better! Re: What order to do landscaping inc artificial lawn 9Sep 16, 2012 3:39 pm Ooh marine carpet, what a fab idea! I had been thinking of trying something similar with the cat tree I have, even if it only lasts a couple of years outside. I can definitely relate, when we built we had criticism for having such a small outdoors area. We plan on doing mostly native garden with a strip of grass out front and back. I struggle to keep plants alive sadly! Native, hardy plants are perfect for us! I loved the idea of a block in the hills but somehow I think it wouldn't have worked too well! If you're using a cat mesh to enclose the area I'm told birds etc don't usually attempt to squeeze through the tiny gaps, so kitties should be fine to enjoy the garden without eating the birdies I can't wait to have mine installed! (Look now, I'm sidetracking your landscape thread with cat talk, I'm dreadful for that...) Re: What order to do landscaping inc artificial lawn 10Sep 16, 2012 4:44 pm Thats perfectly fine!!! I love cats!!! They have had a lot of effect on our build and colour choices LOL Oooh please put up pictures of the cat run when done! We are going the netting, as you can have a much larger area, the rigid tunnels would be cool, but are expensive in comparison and my two would probably get stuck! We had a 630m block and were only allowed 50% coverage... which is epic garden i would have built right to the edge hehe We are essentially going to let the cats have most of it and make the entertaining area more courtyardish and "outdoor roomy" we aren't huge entertainers anyway although new house might change that! I have no problems with small outside areas, less water and less upkeep. We are probably not far from requiring total water bans over summer in the future which is a scary thought! But i would rather have drinking water than a lawn This is the 2 moggies in question heheh http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc439/guilty_angel13/IMG_0810.jpg Jen Building with HomeGroupWA (started as Scott Park Homes ) - Grand Wisteria Check out my Build Thread!! We now have our maintenance free, 60% cooler than pavers/concrete and CSIRO approved turf around the pool.. just the garden at the back now! and a shade sail.
