Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 08, 2012 10:43 pm Hi all, I have read the previous posts on the forum, but am still a bit confused about the best evergreen magnolias for a hedge/screen - we live in the Adelaide Hills (get frost in winter) and are looking to use magnolias along a 12m easterly fence, 2m high, but hedge will need to be higher, to screen shed/neighbours, so the quicker they grow the better! Trying to choose between Kay Parris, Little Gem and Teddy Bear - Teddy Bear seems very expensive compared to the other 2; but really want to know which one will give the best hedging effect ie density/thickness of growth, required height, plus rate of growth. I know Kay Parris and Little Gem say they are great specimen trees, so also need to ensure the type we plant will have foliage at the base, not just trunk. Any thoughts etc would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Re: Magnolias - which one?? 2Sep 11, 2012 11:32 am Price has a lot to do with it. I have 20 little gems that are growing to hedge. The reason I bought them is because they are cheaper and I bought them directly from the grower. Went to Emerald. Vic. They are very good but the others are excellent If I had the big bucks, sure I would go for Teddy Bear and Paris. My grower does not have them, that means I have to buy them from the nursery. OMG really expensive. The leaves are slightly different and yes they are naturally denser. Do what your pocket allows. Very common on rendered homes Smaller suppliers get the lower quality raw materials 6 11850 4 14258 That is a really good attitude Akin to you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I do enjoy watching that tik tok inspector from Victoria but he does go a little… 12 81847 |
