Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It gets slight sun in the morning only in Winter and in summer gets the hot midday sun and by the afternoon is in the shade. We were wanting to plant something along the fence line to cover up the fence a bit. We were thinking climbers, but not too sure on what variety best suits. If anyone has any great ideas, please let me know. Thanks Jared Re: Help with plant ideas! 2Aug 23, 2012 11:39 pm We once trained Kennedeyas to a western fence, no sun all day then 2hrs of the hot afternoon sun, then shade again. We had a Kennedya Nigricans and the red Coral pea. We made a wire frame for them to climb on. Once established the black coral pea completely overwhelmed the smaller red Coral Pea (we were wanting them to entwine). You can almost see it growing it is feral! We planted them straight into the sand, occasionally gave them some seasol as they were getting established. In 4 years the Black coral pea was up along the fence and spreading like mad. The fifth year we had to cut it right back... Lovely when in flower. Re: Help with plant ideas! 5Aug 24, 2012 7:12 pm Just remembered today that we did feed it regularly with seasol while getting established...more than I said at first! It was our first house, a LONG time ago. Also we mulched but didn't add anything to the sand, we got them from Lullfitz nursery and George grows them "au naturelle". Best way to culitivate natives, except for perhaps adding some of the native slow release osmocote as well... and don't worry about the size of the plant, as I said the Black coral pea grows outassight...! Re: Help with plant ideas! 6Aug 30, 2012 10:52 pm No need for native slow release on them. They are not sensitive to any particular nutrient. Re: Help with plant ideas! 7Aug 30, 2012 10:56 pm Make sure you add bentonite clay to the sand. You can add compost and landscape mixes as much as you like but without clay in there as well, its not good soil and many in Perth will not afford a garden in the years to come with out it. This is needed for natives also. We are not growing plants in native soils. They were removed well and truly before the estate was constructed. The coral pea is a ripper of a choice. You'll see the flowers at night 0 4716 I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
