Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 22, 2012 6:00 pm Hi Fu, Robinia x ambigua 'Decaisneana' Or anyone who has had this tree in their life. I am thinking about planting it as my feature tree. So far I have a few pros and cons Pro Pretty Flowers Deciduous Fast Grower Cons Thorns Potential suckers if the roots are disturbed Might grow a bit too big - I've read anywhere between 8- 15m I am interested in hearing everyones thoughts - or even thoughts about their favourite feature tree. I have also thought about Japanese Maples . Thanks ! Re: Hey Fu, Thoughts on my potential feature trees please 2Aug 25, 2012 6:16 pm No fricken way would I ever recommend a Robinia of any sort. Unless I hated them, but I don't hate anyone. I am reserved about Jap maples for most places. Here in WA it's only places like Denmark and Albany you might get away with one. For Melbourne, things may go OK at first but Melbourne is seeing a shift in its climate type to a more Mediterranean climate. With a return to El Niño, trees like that will cop a flogging and look awful more often than they'll look great. So feature trees can also be fruit tress. Some fantastic flower shows are given by fruit trees. In fact they will pants a regular ornamental for flower. You get a bonus as well, fruit you can share with friends and family A good thing for sure Dwarf fruit trees like the Peaches, Plums, Apricots, Nectarines etc can be nice and small (2-3m) and offer that right shape people want from trees. Ornamental trees, Chinese Tallow, Prunus nigra Re: Hey Fu, Thoughts on my potential feature trees please 3Aug 26, 2012 7:58 am Fu Manchu No fricken way would I ever recommend a Robinia of any sort. Re: Hey Fu, Thoughts on my potential feature trees please 4Aug 26, 2012 11:48 am Hey Fu, Just thought I would update you that I didn't buy the Robina - I bought a Cercis Canadensis - Forest Pansy. Smaller tree but has great colour foliage and pretty flowers. I'm happy as this will look quite good in the garden. Thanks for your help - you help me change my mind Re: Hey Fu, Thoughts on my potential feature trees please 5Aug 29, 2012 11:19 pm They sucker even when the roots are left alone. I've seen it many times over. All 3 items listed are defects and are of concern.
