Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 05, 2012 9:19 am Does anyone know if the risers on steps up a slope in the front garden have to conform to the same standard as risers on stairs inside a house? Is there a minimum and a maximum the riser can be? From some of the gardens I've been in I wouldn't have thought so but my husband says there is a standard and it is the same inside and outside. Re: Steps and riser height 2Aug 10, 2012 3:05 pm Your hubby is right but councils and inspectors probably won't pull you up on it if they are garden steps. It is more to do with safety and comfort as you ascend and descend stairs. MIN TREAD 240MM - MAX 355 MM RECOMMENDED - 300 MM. MIN RISER 115MM - MAX 190 MM Taken off one of my councils guidelines but I'm pretty sure these are Building Code of Australia rules. Stewie Re: Steps and riser height 4Aug 10, 2012 3:24 pm Thanks for the replies Stewie D and stormjr. Actually I was most concerned by how low a riser I could have. 115mm sounds good to me so if that fits into the standard, that's grand. And I'll make sure they are all of equal height. Re: Steps and riser height 5Aug 13, 2012 10:35 pm There are definitely standards in regards to this, found them on the web when I needed them and quickly forgot once we've gone past that issue! Anyway, you go with what you are comfy with, as long as it's within (the standard). You will also find (online) that there is a formula (a relationship) between riser height and tread depth. It actually makes a lot of sense. A good example is having low risers with deep treads - ]that ratio will give you a comfortable walk over the stairs. The lower the risers, the treads need to be deeper - walking over very low risers would resemble walk on flatland, so your step will be longer, therefore the tread needs to be deeper. On the other hand, if the risers are on the high end of the scale, the steps/traeds need to be less and less deep. Again, it makes a lot of sense in practice. Oh yes, I would find 11.5 cm too low. Ours are about 14 cm, and the treads are about 31 cm - a comfy walk over the stairs will little effort. In fact, it would have been better that treads were even deeper, at least 33cm (thanks to our landscaper - not!!). Anyway, you do what you think is best! It ( Slope Relationship ) is actually 2R+G = 550mm min and 700mm max ( BCA ) but to keep to that is being a bit pedantic for garden steps.
