Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 04, 2012 8:15 pm I've just read through most of the turf laying guide (which is awesome by the way!) and was just wondering how this would differ for the planting of grass/lawn by seed? Looking at the Emerald Kike as you've previously suggested for our acre block.. Jem's Custom build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=58630 Re: Fu - help please! Planting seed instead of turf. 2Aug 05, 2012 1:10 pm The same deal. So many think too much about what their lawn will be like in 3 weeks without any thought or care about what it will be like in 5 years or longer. We are talking about amending the structure. Ultimately there will be roots, fungi, bacteria and more growing in that soil to sustain the growth we look at above the ground. So its all the same. Emerald Kikuyu would be a great idea in some cases where very large areas need to be covered (bigger than an urban block) I'm very concerned about the other types of lawn seeds sold and don't recommend their use. Re: Fu - help please! Planting seed instead of turf. 3Aug 05, 2012 1:29 pm Thanks Fu, so compact the soil etc... as per turf laying? What's your thoughts on planting turf squares instead of rolling it out to save a little $$$ since we have such a large area. Jem's Custom build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=58630 Re: Fu - help please! Planting seed instead of turf. 4Aug 05, 2012 1:46 pm if it's kike and you plant smallish squares/plugs of it I'm sure it will fill in pretty quickly once the warmer weather hits. Just make sure all the prep is done properly. Better to spend the extra $ on that and save by using small plugs ( cut up squares) of lawn than spending out big on the plant and not having the prep done properly. We did plugs with our backyard lawn in our last house. It was a great way to save $ that we didn't have to waste. ( buffalo though) Re: Fu - help please! Planting seed instead of turf. 5Aug 05, 2012 5:32 pm I planted Emerald Kikuyu last September. Already have kikuyu and some EZ in there as well. Used the same prep as for laying turf. I put up string and plastic bags around the area as the birds where munchin on the seeds... little buggers... Thanks to NSW's wet summer it struggled for a while but then started to take off at the beginning of the year. Leaf is a nice dark green colour and thin so nice to walk on. At the moment it is brown but im sure it will green up when the nights get warmer. Im a bit parial to the EK and EZ ,so have a tendency to rip up the kikuyu, so the others can spread and take over... The other half is not impressed... "Why do you keep ripping up the grass"... If you think the grass will appear overnite it wont. It takes a while.... a long while.... Re: Fu - help please! Planting seed instead of turf. 6Aug 05, 2012 7:33 pm After doing my own lawn and now being a lot more educated on soil, do not use a plate compactor on clay soil if you plan to grow anything in it. It will destroy the soils structure that was created during the ripping/hoeing/cultivating and make it very hard for roots to penetrate. Use a light roller. If you have a sandy soil/imported soil you can compact away, but for clay based soils let the soil settle naturally. AFAIK, flashing is a minimum standard. Out of curiosity is your window glass stamped with AS requirements in any of the corners of each pane? Im almost certan if theyre… 2 6271 They using concrete or timber sleepers? Timber or steel uprights? Any drainage behind sleeper? 3 5801 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7079 |
