Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 04, 2012 3:18 pm We have a garden bed built into the side of a gentle slope (so the bed is flat but then there is a drop of about 20 cms to the next level). The garden bed has been having some drainage issues which do not appear to be clay related (these are not severe enough to cause puddles to form in the bed but it takes ages for the bed to dry out, on occasions moss has grown there etc). This has caused problems after heavy rain where the plants contained in the bed will die from excess moisture in the soil. The sandstone wall leading down to the next level does not have any weep/drainage holes in it. I was wondering if drilling some holes in it would help this issue or whether a more drastic solution may be needed? Any suggestions would be welcome. Re: Sandstone terrace garden bed drainage 2Aug 04, 2012 3:35 pm 2c = it should have had a parging (membrane to prevent ingress) on the inside of the ret wall and 1 or more release points depending on the run. They could be drilled into the best(most favorable) point of release..angled to rundown... drilled to take some pvc pipe and 'find' some opened cell foam 'backing rod' to suit the pipe, fill the pipe with the backing rod and install the pipe. the foam will help to prevent the pipe blocking up and can be removed and replaced a 90deg bend finishes it off Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Sandstone terrace garden bed drainage 3Aug 04, 2012 9:00 pm Thanks for this suggestion. Do you think that this could be the problem (i.e. the lack of a membrane and piping)? Installing it would involve digging up/killing some established plants and so I am keen to be fairly certain that this would resolve the issue. How would you go about removing and replacing the foam without having to dig the pipe up again? Re: Sandstone terrace garden bed drainage 4Aug 05, 2012 11:57 am no digging just drill and fit ... maybe re read above Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Sandstone terrace garden bed drainage 5Aug 06, 2012 9:11 am Thanks for your help. Sorry - not very handy. Am a bit confused by what you mean by a "90deg bend finishes it off". Also if parging isn't already installed wouldn't that mean digging up the bed? With the pvc piping would it be of benefit to install one with holes along the side (to increase the area of contact with the earth) or would this not matter? Re: Sandstone terrace garden bed drainage 6Aug 06, 2012 9:29 am Oops sorry.. ok the pipe is drilled horizontal(With fall) to the earth in the next level down, should you parge?, well if this was in contact with the house and could some how ingress to the walls of the house then yes it should be parged. The 90deg bend is on the out side of the wall. Any chance you have a photo? Hope this helps Where you are coming from is where you are going to...
