Golden Staph maybe an issue and disinfectants will need to be applied to the area to maintain its health. Dog poo and childens mouths. On real turf surfaces there are enough beneficial microbes active for there to be little to no risk. Tough call on this one though. What about creating a roughly circular and wide path. Centre area covered with finer pine bark? Circuits that the kids can laps on are always a winner. Bring plants out from the fence line so the dogs can have a spot to make a den and also run around the boundary freely. 3x8m not a lot, your right. Or what if you pave, liquid limestone or deck the area to say, 2x6. That might leave enough garden for the kids to play and the dogs to have a spot to poo. Or a spot for the dogs to play and the kids to poo? Leaving the area tidy & aesthetically pleasing. South Australians may also get it easy in some parts. In Melbourne it can be more expensive than here. I think the timber deck would be a little more forgiving on the kids.
