Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 31, 2012 1:35 am Hi all, Hope you (and Fu!!) can offer some advice. I need to plant a low hedge (approx 60cm tall) all the way around the top of our sand pad as soon as we move in. It must be fast growing and preferably water wise. Our dog is blind and I'm so worried he'll go down the edge of the rocks! I will have to plant a huge amount of them so any suggestions on where to get bulk purchases or seedlings that I can start growing in pots now would be greatly appreciated! Here is a pic so you can see what I mean. I will need to hedge right up the top of the rocks: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Low hedge - Perth 2Jul 31, 2012 12:54 pm You will be best to use tube stock to establish a low hedge. Now is a pretty good time to do that. Use tubes because they establish faster than using more advanced specimens. Hard to believe but true. Also it gets costs right down on establishing a hedge. Westringea (Near bullet proof) Correa Beaufortia squarrosa Melaleuca nesophila "Little Nessie" (bullet proof plant) add bentonite and zeolite and 30ltrs of compost/conditioner per 1m2 to a depth of 30cm. (depth of a spade) right through the entire area to be planted. Future proof. There are so many better options than the usual McBoring McHedges like lily pilly or african box. Re: Low hedge - Perth 3Aug 01, 2012 9:58 pm Thanks Fu Where can I buy tubestock in Perth? I might have to wait til we get up there so I can get the soil right and do it all properly. There is a nursery in boyanup ( 'bout 22 kms inland from bunbury) that usually has lots of tube stock. You can ring them and see if they have any of those items in stock. They grow their own. Re: Low hedge - Perth 6Aug 03, 2012 12:04 am Thank you both for your advice!! Kexkez we are in the hills but heading down south next school holidays so might have to pay them a visit Re: Low hedge - Perth 7Aug 03, 2012 8:42 am Must say, Zanthorrea nursery is a pretty awesome nursery. hills in perth. Well worth a visit. I've only been there once but they have loads and loads of lovely tube stock. Re: Low hedge - Perth 8Aug 04, 2012 9:54 pm I'll have to check it out! As a matter of interest, what do you think of a hedge of miniature roses? Would look pretty blah in winter though after pruning Re: Low hedge - Perth 9Aug 04, 2012 10:30 pm You'd find them very bare in Winter. Are you happy to have pruned down sticks for part of the year when you have to prune? or are you wanting a thicker kind of hedge? Rose mary would look nice and be useful but you have to keep it well pruned. Mine got away from me in perth due to my usual slackness. I did dwarf abelias this time. my first attempt fried though as I planted them just before Christmas. my 2nd lot aren't too bad but I think they would have a tough time in Perth. I've lost 3 down the d0dgy soil end of the hedge. Re: Low hedge - Perth 10Aug 05, 2012 1:11 pm Minature roses. Good thinking outside the square Expensive hedge though. Re: Low hedge - Perth 12Aug 05, 2012 7:44 pm Thorns and a blind dog???... Correa alba would suit far better. Re: Low hedge - Perth 13Aug 06, 2012 2:36 pm BeatrixKiddo Thorns and a blind dog???... Correa alba would suit far better. hehehe I didn't think of that. He's very cautious so we just wanted some kind of barrier but yes, roses probably not the best idea, and not too keen on a hedge of sticks in winter Looking at around 50cm high. I'm not overly enthusiastic with gardening so the less maintenance, the better! Will check out some nurseries and see what catches my eye Low hedge - Perth 14Aug 06, 2012 7:23 pm If that is the height you want, I'd be using Beaufortia squarrosa. Buy in tubes. Re: Low hedge - Perth 16Aug 17, 2012 5:34 pm Oh! I know an other good one. There is a Dwarf Gero wax. Dwarf Purple Pride. Keep an eye out for it. At this stage there is only one wholesale grower of it and they sell to a select few garden centres. PM me and I'll try source one if you want. Re: Low hedge - Perth 17Aug 19, 2012 12:27 pm Thanks Fu! Seems we might have to wait until next winter before planting (don't want tradies to ruin newly planted plants!) so might have to get back to you after we move in. Thanks for thinking of me though! Re: Low hedge - Perth 20May 20, 2013 11:49 pm Really hard to get in WA. WA growers (there's only two here with the licence to grow it from the best I know) aren't growing it like years ago. A really good plant but it is one of the plants that's had Myrtaceae rust appear. WA is free of it. The plants though have to be brought into WA and its getting harder for them to do that. Like Agonis AfterDark, they are occasionally around but grown less by our wholesale nurseries. 4 6193 If you can calculate the reasonable charged head from let's say 100mm below the gutter to the top of where the vertical riser's horizontal discharge pipe will be, that… 11 17525 Those span tables can be pushed a little for a low deck if you dont mind a little flex.
