Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 26, 2012 4:18 pm Hi all, Starting the prep work for the new lawn and trying to prepare the soil. Existing soil is slightly 'clayish', so the plan is to mix some compost with sand (possibly 50/50 mix). I have sourced some organic compost, but no idea what type of sand to get. I have come across brick sand, concrete/paving sand and the white sand found in sandpits, no idea what I should use. Have the zeolite and perlite ready to go as well. Any help is appreciated! Re: Preparing soil for lawn what sand? 2Jul 27, 2012 10:31 am And what is the lawn going to be used for... looking at or playing on? Don't bother mixing sand in if the lawn is for looking at or low wear, just use compost. If the lawn will be subject to wear then you needs lots of sand. >50% of the total soil depth will need to be sand, so if your clay depth is 300mm you need to mix through >150mm of sand. Which raises your levels. Adding a little sand will actually make your clay worse. Re: Preparing soil for lawn what sand? 4Jul 30, 2012 11:31 am You need to ensure zeolite is added through the structure. I would add some sand blended through with clay soils. 15% compost ratio is all that is required.
