Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 25, 2012 12:26 pm Hi. Have a garden bed with around 12 Magnolia trees as a feature against the back fence. I'd like to add some accent lights to it. Is this somethingbthat can be done diy? We have an outdoor power point outside . Was thinking of running the wires in a conduit well under the grass. Any ideas or help would be great, recommend me a kit. I'm sure to get someone in to do something like this wouldn't be exactly cheap. Thanks Re: garden accent lighting 2Jul 25, 2012 1:20 pm There are quite a few DIY Garden Light options available. Some more expensive than others. The just of it is that you'll need to determine how many lights you want and where. This will tell you how many watts you'll need the transformer to be and how long a cable you need too. You even get coloured lights if you wanted. The DIY is allowed because the lights run on low voltage (12v/24v) which makes the requirements for running the low voltage cable in the ground much more relaxed and with risk to electric shock no longer being fatal, just don't do it if you have a pacemaker . We plan on running a our low-voltage cable in some conduit (about 25mm diameter) at about 200mm below the surface along the garden perimeter as far as it is practical. Connection of the lights are easy to as they just join up to the "main line" where it comes by. Hopefully you have an external power point that you can plug into, or a junction box that your electrician can connect the transformer to. Some people have the transformer in the house and run a cable through the wall to the outside (just make sure you don't void your termite protection). I would suggest you pop into a local bunnings DIY and ask them how it works. You might even consider attending one of their DIY workshops on the topic.
