Re: Winter Grass! 2May 16, 2012 1:49 pm Seeds come from anywhere. Birds flying overhead and pooping them out. Blown on the wind. Spores on lawnmower blades- a common problem with getting in someone to cut the grass, these guys don't wash the blades between lawns and so clover and prickles get spread around. If your lawn is healthy it will be more pest resistant. But permanent removal of this sort of thing from the environment around you....no. Re: Winter Grass! 3May 16, 2012 2:00 pm We "received" some weeds in the turf itself, and some new weeds grew in the turf later. This is what we did: - Let the water soften the soil (either wait for a rainy period or water in the turf really well) - The following day, get an old knife and gently help each weed out by putting the knife close to it and helping the whole root out The point is in taking the whole plant out, with the roots. This does no damage to the turf (or the environment ) and you won't be spreading poisons around your home. This does take some time, but 2 people can do about 200m2 in about 1 hour or less. We did this twice, with about 2 months pause in between. But, we did such a good job the first time around, so the second round was just dealing with those where we accidentally broke the root off, so it remained in the ground. After this, we hardly had a small handfull of weeds over almost a year! Yes, it is not as easy as spraying some stuff on, but is way safer and more satisfying (if you value your DIY ). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Winter Grass! 4May 16, 2012 2:24 pm Lex that's the way to do it for sure. Yes, if a lawn is healthy and a densely matted variety, even weeds won't have as much chance to grow in it, but some of 'em are so darn tough they'll grow on a barbed wire fence Re: Winter Grass! 6Aug 18, 2012 10:46 pm There is quite a few posts of mine relating to how best to control winter grass.
