Chemical fertilisers will retard healthy growth and make for a weak pest prone plant that then perpetuates you buying more crap to spray the plants with. All the fert companies produce all the bug sprays For any food crop in a tub, the most efficient size is 30ltrs. This is the balance between using not too much or too little soil. The right amount of water is available. The right root size is able to develop. Pots, tubs, plastic containers of any sort are fine, as long as they hold soil and have some drainage for the water to come out. I can only suggest to grow food totally organically. As someone with a deep understanding of what is in the products so many of you buy and having a great deal of chemical horticultural training and experience in years deep in the past, everyone should grow their food organically.
