Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 13, 2012 12:43 pm Hi guys, first time poster.... My area has a bunch of street trees that ( to me ) look like some kind of maple. One of them is overun by ants and the bark is peeling off on one side only ( western side )...the same side that has no foliage on it. These trees were planted by the developers who have since moved on and council have little interest in the ongoing maintenance of the area. Pics include a closeup of one leaf ( I need an ID ) alongwith general pics of the tree in question. Re: Help me save this tree. 2Apr 13, 2012 1:52 pm Your street tree is an oak. The cambium layer on the trunk has been damaged & the tree is now susceptible to disease, rot & pests. You could possibly get something from a nursery to paint over the injury to form a protective membrane, but the damage looks quite extensive, so it may be a lost cause & better to just replace it. FYI - gorgeous as oaks are, they do eventually grow very, very large &, as a result, can be quite destructive to hard landscaping. I speak from personal experience (see photo below) - my previous house's street was lined with pin oaks (planted in the early 1950's). The extensive root system brought down my front brick fence (lifted & separated the fence from the footings) & did same to our driveway (similar thing happening to everyone else on the street as well). Having said that, an oak-lined street looks absolutely stunning in Summer (lovely cool, green canopy) & then again in Autumn when the leaves change to a beautiful burnt orange - right before the hard work of blower-vac or raking begins for the 3 months thereafter. Note in the photo below: new footpath & front part of driveway, & now, no front fence. The oak on the opposite side of the street gives you a bit of an idea of the eventual height.
