Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Ponds 3Mar 02, 2008 6:00 pm I'm looking to have a small pond of sorts sometime in the future to grow water chesnuts & some water-based plants like irises & lotus flowers - no ideas yet so I'm interested to see what people suggest! After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ponds 4Mar 02, 2008 6:57 pm Ponds 5Mar 03, 2008 9:20 pm Here is our pond/water feature it is fibreglass lined & has plants & fish. If you intend having fish then you will be in for a lot of maintenance, cleaning of pump filters and pumps not to mention regular cleaning of the base of the pond fish poo everywhere!! The plus side of having fish is that you should not be troubled by mozzies. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Ponds 6Mar 03, 2008 9:24 pm Very nice martyme!!

Went fishing in the blow, but left me the heads! Nice of her. She’s gone now…..and the fish are getting big! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Ponds 11Mar 04, 2008 6:33 am I built a couple of small ponds.
The first one (With me in the photo) was a hand packed concrete structure with plaster finish. I built this between jobs and it took me the better part of a month to build it including a weekend spent with the concrete mixer. It measured around 4 by 3.5 by 1.2. The second I built a few years later. It is a 5 by 2.5 by 1.8 deep. I dug the hole by hand, lined it, laid up the steel and then got a concrete spray truck in and a bloke to form and plaster it. The second way is much, much better. We are building raised veggie beds with the same stone - good to see we could make a pond with the same stuff as well. Not sure if we want fish - though I definitely want to be able to grow some water-based foods like water chestnuts and taro. What were the steps to create the pond once you build the wall structure? These are the steps that I took when building the pond:- 1. Levelled base using packed sand. 2. Positioned Fibreglass Pond 3. Positioned Pagoda feature 4. Installed Pump & lights 5. Built wall around Fibreglass pond SIMPLE!! Re: Ponds 15Mar 04, 2008 9:06 pm I'm just reporting a little housekeeping on this thread - a few unnecessary posts have been cleared away.
I recall about 25 years back, a little boy - around 2 years old - had fallen / stepped into a pond at a family friend's place. Luckily, the kid survived after his brother dragged him out. EDIT: Now, when you say wall, are you referring to safety fencing? Re: Ponds 16Mar 05, 2008 7:40 am Ah - fibreglass pond inside! I was thinking that you put some sort of liner in it - nice work.
As for fencing - if a pond is only about 50cm deep - I don't see why you should bother. After 4 years - we're in! Not sure of legalities but if you or your family/friends have little children I would do so - toddlers can drown in few cm of water and can do so silently. My parents had a friend whose son aged 4 drowned in a wading pool with several adults in the back yard at the time, 10 m away having coffee on the patio and no-one heard a thing. |
