Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 25, 2008 2:04 pm Ok! With the front yard just about complete, I figure it is time to start getting some finishing touches in the back as well...
This is the idea I had for the water feature. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It is basically 3 screens of merbau in a triangle shape with a pond down the bottom to catch the falling water. The spout would be one of those stainless steel cascading spouts about 900mm wide and would keep the falling water away from the wooden slats. If the splashing was too much I would consider usind rendered blueboard for the bottom third of the screens. Once installed the effect I hope to acheive would look something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Anyone have some thoughts on this design? Some areas for improvement etc? Re: An idea for my water feature... 2Feb 25, 2008 2:25 pm I really like your idea, should look good, clever boy!!! (re paintshop!!!)
Can I just suggest something???? To bad here it comes anyway……As most back yards with fences I see you have one CB and paling… have you thought of what you are going to do there?? I think some heavy duty wicker or trellis work up both fences would do a nice job of hiding the 2. Trellis is nice then you can grow some climbers or ornaments. Or has it been blue for a while???? I think seeing four surface textures will be, well, quite ugly and the water feature will make the overall effect worse, not better. I'd concentrate on plants so there was something pleasant to look at, perhaps something that included berries or fruit to attract birds, and for a water feature, a birdbath. The current design seems quite 'industrial" to me.
Obviously this is just my highly opinionated 2c Re: An idea for my water feature... 5Feb 25, 2008 4:57 pm Hi Matt,
I have watched your build with interest, and am very impresed with the way you can 'draw' things before you build them eg: water feature, can you tell me if you do this from the My Virtual Home program? I have just sent away for the CD, and am hoping it will give me a 3D view of my plans. The My Virtual Home Program is awesome but it is limited in terms of these sorts of ideas. Most of the "drawings" I do now are done using a paint program called Paint Shop Pro. It is not a professional program but it does give you a good degree of control without going to the photoshops etc... As for designing your house and seeing it in 3D you will be really impressed with MVH. Remember to save ofter and persistence is the key and if you get stuck ask someone... Good luck! Matt Re: An idea for my water feature... 7Feb 25, 2008 9:53 pm Hmmmm!
I kinda like the brushed look... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am looking for a more "permanent" structure than a birdbath. We have wildlife all around us (cows, horses, birds, kangaroos etc... but this is purely to look at rather than be functional... the fence is definately in need of a 'makeover'... Re: An idea for my water feature... 9Feb 26, 2008 7:51 am That looks way better. But won;t the area behind the feature become a bug & spider zone ? (Hate to always be the voice of doom).
How about this for some quick ideas: http://images.google.com.au/images?hl=e ... ages&gbv=2 Re: An idea for my water feature... 10Feb 26, 2008 12:54 pm Matt
I dont mind the water feature with the textured material behind it but think it would look better if it was integrated with a few plants around it. Some water features I have seen at displays hit you in the face rather than blending in and highlighting an area of space. Found a few pics which might be helpful. Alternatively add a variety of materials (maybe a steel base) or variation in height or depth to the feature ... say a metal sheet over the wood. It might look good if there was a path leading to it so it seems to have a purpose, or some rocks around the front with low ****** plants that soften up the base. If you are keen to have it against the wall then I reckon it looks best straight back on it rather than set forward slightly (IMO) or one that you can walk around and see from different perspectives. Hope above are helpful re: further ideas . Your pic looks very good I would just add another dimension to it. Bored teenagers love lighting up brush fences at night. And realistically folks, how often are you going to maintain your water evaporating water feature. All councils are being told - remove the water from your fountains - do you think that this policy will be implemented into residential houses as well? Yeah right - My last bird bath (passive bowls style) needed filling and washing out every fortnight in summer - Fountains evaporate even more - and I'm being the devils advocate - because I reckon in 5 years time these lovely water features will be ripped out again - mossies love them Beside - Do you reckon Matt will let any bird (of the feathered variety) get within 10 yards of his backyard water feature.
