Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 15, 2012 9:53 am Hi, New build will leave me with a backyard 20m wide, 13m long with a 2m downhill fall. I don't have a huge budget so what are implications of just leaving this slope, or should I definately look at leveling with retaining walls? I'm guessing one retaining wall 1m high through the middle would allow me to have 2 flat levels? 1m can be done DIY without engineering design? Cheers Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57639 Re: Design for sloping backyard 2Feb 15, 2012 11:17 am 1m in the middle would get you 2 flatter areas but each would still have 1/2m of slope. Basically a steep slope means there is a risk of erosion unless the soil is protected by grass or a gravel mulch. Re: Design for sloping backyard 4Feb 16, 2012 10:49 am Yeah depends what your end use is for it. A slope can add interest to landscaping, flat terraces can look pretty boring. Plan out what you want from your yard, try working with the slope or only retaining the neccesary parts. Re: Design for sloping backyard 5Feb 23, 2012 11:05 pm We have a similar slope in our backyard, we have just finished landscaping, we did not build any retaining wall, we got in a bob cat and built terraces with sloped garden beds inbetween, we used the odd man handlable sandstone bolder on any area that was a little steep, and each terrace is linked with a grassed path slopping accross the block. If its not raining tomorrow I will take some photos and post. Just work with the slope and think outside the square and you can have an unquie backyard.
