Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 21, 2010 7:51 am I have to buy a new lawn mower for approx 125 sqm of grass in my garden. (Yes, I would love to buy a Honda but can't afford it at the moment) The choices I have whittled it down to are: Rover Quickstart XTRA23848 $ 449.00 Masport 158CC 579955 $ 479.00 Victa (2 stroke) HMS462 $ 499.00 Victa Hurricane HMS464 $ 469.00 Rover I4000 23846 $ 359.00 Rover I4500 23847 $ 398.00 Victa Vantage 460 VCS464 $ 349.00 I am leaning towards the Rover Quickstart XTRA23848 $ 449.00 as it seems to be a quality build 4 stroke etc. Would anyone choose any other one? Does anyone have this mower? Thanks guys Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 3Jan 21, 2010 1:35 pm of those, Masport by a mile. Best option is second hand mower shops and ebay for second hand "cylinder" or "reel" mowers. That is something that will give you a beautiful finish to your lawn Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 4Jan 21, 2010 1:38 pm What’s so good about the Masport Fu? I am wanting to buy a lawn mower too and am trying to decide which one, what’s the best model? I thought Rover or Victa would be better? Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 6Jan 22, 2010 11:00 am Have a good look at the Victas and Rovers. They are near on identical Victa is owned by rover. The massport is so far ahead of the others. Better quality, locally made. You said of those ones listed They all have the same motors. Any mower with a Honda engine is a better bet and this was also posted by Grasshopper I think in another thread on the same topic As for a cylinder mower, well this is the point at which you get turf with one of these You will no longer be cutting the grass. No rotary mower is going to give you a nice finish to your lawn. It just ripps the leaves of the grass and that's that. A reel or cylinder mower is one of these... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This will get you a lawn that looks like the MCG It is weighted so rolls the turf every pass. It is movement is powered so you don't push it. The blades cut the turf like scissors cut paper so the finish is perfection. You will get the stripes in the lawn with practice Better motors generally as well. These are worth every single cent you pay for them Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 8Jan 22, 2010 12:31 pm No Way!!!! but they are an excellent mower. There's not that much difference between any of the rotaries in the finish they give, just the features and quality at the price range and choices you gave. Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 11Feb 15, 2010 8:23 pm Just wondering if there are any alternatives to the Alroh that are worth looking at. As much as I'd like to buy one, I'd also like to drive a BMW They look to retail for about $2100 new and for one at about 8 years old I'm looking at about $1000 so what other options are out there? Are there any makes/models that are worth looking at for under $1000? On top of this are there any particularly good places to buy through? Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 13Feb 15, 2010 9:00 pm We just spent a lot of money on our grass (and soil) so I don't want it to be wasted funds and effort by using the wrong mower on it. We've got a lot of grass, probably close to 200m2 at the moment which we're going to look at cutting back over the years but still I want a mower thats going to do a good job. The best things about reel mowers is that they aren't only self driven, they praticly tow you around the lawn. Or perhaps thats just my dad's tinkering on his Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 14Feb 15, 2010 10:26 pm d@n And I'm guessing you would need the right type of grass also? Well it can be done with EZ, Sir Walter and Palmetto. Couch gives the very best but that is a seriously high performance turf that is best left to golf courses and lawn bowls clubs. If you use a couch, you will also use it as a ground cover in the garden beds even if you don't want to. Re: Which new lawn mower? He said to check with mower shops to see if they had any second-hand ones. We have found them for sale as low as $350. We are waiting on one shop to give the mower a service and then we'll go and buy it. Worth a bit of a hunt. Judie Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 17Feb 17, 2010 7:06 pm Thanks Judie Haha! What a cute lawn mower. Not quite right for the 200m2 Cyranos and I have unless I want a day to myself! Then i can send him outside to mow the lawn for 8hrs. Under $500.00 18Feb 17, 2010 8:02 pm Give Balcatta mowers a call. They are pretty well known around the traps. You'd want a 500mm-600mm wide reel mower or sometimes called a cylinder mower. If they have no second hand ones, ask for their recommendations for somewhere Re: Which new lawn mower? Under $500.00 20Dec 02, 2011 11:26 am i absolutely love my cylinder mower. its a 1960's scott bonnar and the lawn is the best its looked since it was done. cuts the leaf rather than tearing it and cuts it alot finer and nicer ive found its growing better also I have 4 mowers at home all from dad and this one is far the best Harrisdale backyard finally done!
