Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 02, 2012 9:58 am Can I use the supply from my rainwater tank that is pumped/plumbed to my laundry, to also run to a subsurface drip system under my 100sqm flat lawn, or should I stick with straight mains? Are there filterring or pressure issues? I am gatherring in bits for a new instal and reading threads and so far I have purchased Netafim dripline and HunterXC controller and valves, but still need to get all the ancilliary bits. Re: Is rainwater ok for subsurface turf irrigation? 3Jan 05, 2012 10:31 pm I plan to purchase either a Netafim or Triangle disc filter, assuming this is adequate and will not keep clogging up using rain water. Still unsure which way to head, Any profesionals out there with experience in this? The only issue is what pressure and volume your water pump can handle but this will only limit the max area you can cover at one time, multiple runs queued after each other will get around the pressure isues. And you can get a flag that will raise based on pressure to check the system is functioning fine. As to clogging you are more likely to get siphoning when the system is switched off and dirt being pulled back up the pipe work causing blockages. The best protection for this is a line flushing valve at the end of the collection manifold which allows you to run water down to flush out any crap in it. But it is always a good idea to filter your tank water before the pump anyways and you can get a good 1 micron two stage filter to help this. Here is the Netafirm Techline AS design guide which shows you what you need and how to do it: http://www.netafim.com.au/uploads/TECHL ... 0GUIDE.pdf Building a Plantation Emperor Q1 at Spring Mountain Estate, Greenbank SE QLD Re: Is rainwater ok for subsurface turf irrigation? 6Feb 25, 2012 7:57 pm The problem is going to be will it be sufficient storage to do the task? An intergrated dripper set up under turf isn't cheap and if you have insufficient capacity to provide water, then it will be an expensive learning curve. The best way to take advantage of water tanks is to plumb them into the toilet, the laundry etc. Most will grossly under estimate the volumes required to water gardens. Also using rainwater for gardens now may be all well and good. However there is a destabilised climate at work and when La Nina swings back to El Nino, you can bet it will be as severe as the last one. Best to plan for what everyone over east seems to have already forgotten, not what is out the window now. Re: Is rainwater ok for subsurface turf irrigation? 7Feb 25, 2012 8:54 pm Thanks Fu, As any system plumbed to the house, if it runs out then it switches over to mains, so will always have a supply for the irrigation, It will just make sure we use the rainwater up first. I am worried about reliability and maintenance. so might just connect to mains anyway. Final question, How important is the expensive techfilter for a 55 square metre lawn, if i all other recomendations such as flush valve and disc filter etc?
