Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 19, 2011 9:26 pm Hi all, I'm all prepared to prep my rear yard for lawns, zeolite, pierlite, spongolite, seamungus, powerfeed, seasol and gogo juice wating in the garage. Rotary Tiller has been borrowed from a neighbour. Wednesday is the day to do all the prep and with a shipment of Nara Zoysia due to arrive from NSW on Thursday night, turf will be delivered on Friday. I will need to build up the soil by as much as 100mm in some areas, so my question is: When I get in the organic compost and till this into the existing clay, I will still need to build up the height. I am concerned that if I just add organic compost and perhaps some sand to build up the level, over time the levels will drop as the compost decomposes into the soil. Should I also include some variety of top soil into the mix to bulk up the levels? If this is the right thing to do, what type of soil or soil mix? I have some clay that I was planning to use with organic compost to back fill top part of a retaining wall, could this be used with only organic compost to add bulk to the lawn area instead? This will then mean I need other soil for wall backfill, although this could be a good option anyway. Any assistance would be appreciated, because to be honest, on the hunt for the soil amendments nobody seemed to know what I was talking about. The pool shop didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked how much for the zeolite until I grabbed a bag, took it to the counter and said this stuff. In following the Fu guide, you sure get some puzzled looks when hunting for zeolite, pierlite, etc here in Melb. Cheers, D. Re: Building up the soil height 3Dec 20, 2011 7:35 am Thanks bashworth. I have been in two minds about the clay for back filling the retaining wall, but figured with the addition of organic compost etc, then it would break up the clay and help create a vibrant soil. And also allow drainage which is important. For the turfed areas, I guess to ensure that the levels do not fall away over time top soil would be required. Still, I want to add plenty of organic compost as per Fu's guide, but not really sure on the proportions. For example, If I was bringing in 3 cubes of soil, how much soil vs how much compost? With that sort of soil type if you ask for a design to include piers then I would also include void formers. That way you should reduce the chances of settlement and heave. 7 4633 Unless the room is for storage then it's non compliant BCA V2 2019 S3 P3.8 You have 2 options 1.
