Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 12, 2011 9:26 am So, with the house built, and the internals getting to a managable stage, I have finally begun my landscaping project. Concentrating on the backyard first, read through this forum extensively. Have bought all the mandatory prerequisites as per our landscaping guru - Fu, zeolite, perlite, seasol, powerfeed, seamungus, molasses and organic mulch. Still looking for a supplier of organic compost in my area. I shall put up the pictures of the areas I am talking when I get home, but wanted to get started with what I am trying to do and the plants I am looking at, so I can get some suggestions and feedback started. My main aim for the garden is to have a really nice fragrence and lots of colourful flowers, and something that has nice multicoloured foilage. The plants I have listed below are just some of the ones I have found from an internet plant supplier. Am happy to have suggestions though. There are 4 zones. zone 1 - is on the side of the house, It is 7m long 0.5m wide. It gets the mid morning sun and the late afternoon sun. My aim here is to have some slimline colourful, fragrant 'stuff'. To give you an idea, I have already planted a climber Jasmine in the first portion of this area. it is in front of a sliding door, so when we open the door we should be able to get some nice fragrence coming through. I am going to keep this to a limit of 2m wide. That leaves me with around 5m, and I was looking at the 'deutzia' variety, around 3 of them. zone 2 and zone 3- this is the same area, 7-8m long by 1.5m wide. I plan to have this divided up into 2 zones, as one side is the fence, and the other side is the patio. zone 2 (fence), I was looking at having around 3-4 2m tall shrubs that can be pruned slimline, but have lots of flowers. One of them my wife wants to be bottlebrush (captain cook). Am unsure of what the other 2/3 should be. In between these 3 or so shrubs, I would like to plant something a bit shorter (around 1m tall) that also has nice foilage and colour, eg dahpnes, lavender etc. In zone 3, which is next to the concrete patio, I would like to lant a hedge that is no higher than 0.5m and is very fragrent, eg port wine magnolia, choiysa ternata or/and gardenia augusta florida. zone 4- this is in front of the house, against the fence line in front of the garage, next to the driveway. I would like to have some tall 'stuff' and some medium 'stuff' with contrasting colours. I was thinking along the lines of conifers (the ones that have a yellow/golden/green leaves rather than just the plain green ones), dwarf vibrofnum, escallonia plants. Thsi area gets virtually all the evening sun, and a lot of the afternoon sun. This is the project at the moment, and aim to get it done before christmas. Would love to hear feedback and suggestions, esp with the other 2 to 3 plants not decided in zone 1. My other question is regarding the timing. Considering that we are coming into the hottest part of the year, is it wiser to hold off planting till after summer or there is no probs doing it now since I will be preping the soil as per Fu's guidelines. Photos of the areas to come. Regards, K. Re: My Landscape project... help and suggestions required 2Dec 12, 2011 10:43 pm Here are the photos. Would really appreciate some feedback and suggestions. Am thinking of putting a sleeper there to raise the garden bed so as to be able to get more good soil etc in there with a gap of about 0.5m from there to the front, is zone 3, which will have the hedge, something like the the port wine magnolias. Inbetween them I have plants that grow to about 1-1.5M and infront of this line, I have a hedge that will be kept at around 0.5m Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is a shrub that my wife bought today to put into the retaining wall. Pls help with suggestions and feedback. Regards, K. Thanks very much! And would the landscaper/contractor generally involve the engineer or is that something the client would do?
