LOL Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 24Dec 18, 2011 8:43 am I decided to put one of my Cacao (aka Chocolate) plants outside, directly under the front entrance to the house. Cacao naturally grow under a forest canopy, and therefore only like filtered sunlight. I'm not expecting much from this experiment, and I have another 8 or so plants in the garage under artificial lights, so if the plant carks it I'll just end up replacing it with a Frangipani or something. I'm also thinking of experimenting with Vanilla, which is from a climbing orchid. I'm hoping that when one of the Frangipanis that I'm bringing indoors over winter get's to about a metre tall, I will buy a Vanilla Orchid and put in the same pot. The aim would be to have the Orchid climb up the trunk of the Frangipani. Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orchard! 25Dec 18, 2011 10:03 am Where did you find the Cacao? Aside of by the front door Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 26Dec 18, 2011 10:11 am Got a pod over a year ago from northern QLD, bought off ebay. Arrived entirely in tact, and I got about 16 plants from the seeds to grow. The claim was that these were from some Cacao plants bred specifically by the CSIRO for Cadbury's use. Here's a few pics of when my wife received it in the mail in October last year and planted them for me as I was travelling for work. Maybe at my end? Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 29Dec 18, 2011 10:56 am I just tried from an anonymous proxy to this thread, and it seems to show the images ok.... Here's a direct link to the picasa web album just in case: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6WpmAROmqMilnlgo-ddma9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/jn3DHFjYnswOfNkpbglcgNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink I don't think they are genetically modified, but don't recall if that was mentioned in the ebay thread. I would hope it's more to do with repeated selection of ideal plants growing well in the conditions in far north queensland, but you can never be sure with scientific research arms like the CSIRO. Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 30Dec 18, 2011 11:02 am And here seems to be a recently completed auction on ebay, from the same person I bought the pods off. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cacao-Pods-Rare-healthy-fast-growing-create-your-own-chocolate-/250948474950?pt=AU_Plants_Seeds_Bulbs&hash=item3a6db1d846#ht_1928wt_1185 Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 31Dec 18, 2011 11:23 am My reply must be lost in cyberspace somewhere!! Anyway, just wanted to say you are setting yourself a challenge with growing tropical stuff in Melb but good on you for experimenting, it seems the hard work is paying off. With all the rain and cooler weather so far this summer, my tomato seedlings are at a complete standstill. Keeping everything crossed that I get at least one fruit from each plant so I have seed for next year. There are 11 different varieties/colours/shapes/sizes of tomatoes plus some self seeded ones that came up in a pot with an avocado that someone gave me.
