Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 09, 2011 2:07 pm I've read these forums previously, but never posted. A showed my work colleague my setup out in the front yard the other day, and he suggested I post it up here ... so here I am!
It all started with chillies, a few years back I had 8 plants, then about 40, and now over 100. This year I've branched out, and now have the following: Chillies, Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Bananas, Coffee, Tea, Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Mandarins, Apples, Pears, Cherries, Plumcots, Nectarine x Plums, Nectarines, Fejoa, Grapes, Curry Leaf, Avocado... this is all in the front yard. I've also got about 8 Frangipani plants, and also in the garage I have some Cacao (over a year old under lights) and I'm trying to get a Pineapple and Coconut to root. I build some garden beds out of recycled printer cartridges, you can read about them @ http://youcantgrowthatinmelbourne.blogspot.com/2011/02/garden-beds-made-from-recycled-printer.html Here are some pics I just took from outside on this lovely 30C day in Melbourne. Do you have any of it stolen being out the front? Ever thought about planting them into the soil rather then keeping them in pots? I've found a few of my pots down the road after some kids messed with them during the night, but the plants were ok and I just put them back in place. My suburb is full of rocks, and not very far down, so planting in soil is not so ideal. The other thing as well is that I can control the soil composition in the pots very easily, I use a combination of: 2 bags of soil mix from garden supply, 2 expanded bricks of coco peat, 4L of perlite, 4L of vermiculite, 2L of pelleted chicken manure that also has seaweed/fish, 2L of zeolite, and a small handful of rockdust. I also have a 240L barrel that I modified to brew my own compost tea. With the 5 worm farms I've got scattered around, I use a few kgs of worm castings as the base to the brew. Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 4Dec 09, 2011 2:17 pm My thoughts exactly Ref! I'm a proponent of grow as much as you can and applaud your efforts Milkman-but would love to see more of your plants in the soil rather than pots YOu could raise the soil level with additives and tree mulch as you've mentioned. I guess for me the aesthetics are an important part of the picture! So for now, I will just enjoy the fact I can grow all these fruits eventually knowing they'll be a lot happier when the roots have more space to grow in. Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 6Dec 09, 2011 2:24 pm Well that makes me happier! We moved into our place on 1 acre last Christmas and I spent the winter prior to that planting out the orchard & berry beds! Take a look at my thread if you like. Is that saying too much? Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 9Dec 10, 2011 5:11 pm What a great food garden you have there! not sure I'd want to move all those pots to mow, can you get treelopper mulch free in your area? The local treeloppers around here have several community dumps where you get as much as you need free...have to shovel it into the trailer/ute and onto the garden when you get home but that's OK. When I was there two days ago they had pine mulch in a separate heap which I thought was considerate. Specifically wanted a Keitt mango, but will probably settle for a Nam Doc Mai. Re: Who needs grass out the front when you can have an orcha 18Dec 11, 2011 5:17 pm What type of Passionfruit milkman? Mine are still in pots but there is a Panama Red and a yellow skinned, large fruit variety...name escapes me atm. Once the driveway is done I hope to put a large piece of steel mesh on the north facing garage wall and plant the Pashies there. Only need to get trailers etc into the backyard now and then but will keep them fairly well tied back to the mesh.
