Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 15, 2011 10:01 am Hi, I am sorting through the soil choices I have in my area. And these are all of them below. I am in need at this stage for around 17 cubic meters of soil and going to follow Fu's soil prep regeime ready for turf and some garden beds. Current soil is really bad clay. I have called a few places and this is what I have access to. 1) This is made by a local bloke he uses Stable manure composted down with some sand mixed through 20% chook poo put in at the end. approx ratios 70% stable manure, 20% Chook poo, 10% sand. All organic $39.60 Cubic Meter 2) Local landscape company a blend of compost, mulch and topsoil. They could not give me any information on the blend and percentages and no ideas on what compost etc. $50 a cubic Meter 3) Another local Landscape company blend of topsoil compost and fertilizer with no ideas on ratio's $52 a cubic meter. 4) Local landscape supplier again with a 50% compost and 50% topsoil mix can verify organic. $53 a cubi meter 5) Smaller business with 50% sandy loam and 50% compost (with compost aged at 6-8 years apparently) $38 a cubic meter To me option one looks the best for what I have access too. What does everyone else think? Cheers Steve Re: Soil Choices in my area (Which One Please) 2Nov 15, 2011 11:51 am Whoa, its a tough call to say without being able to smell and feel them. You guys over east love the concept of "topsoil". Well avoid the high manure based ones, they'll break down very rapidly and you'll be left with little more than what you have now. Fertiliser added? I'm wondering why they need to add fertiliser What are they masking? skip that one. number 4 would at a guess (and without being able to see, smell and feel it) would be the better option. 17 cubes is a really massive quantity! Goodness me. Remember you are making use of your existing soil as well. Good composts will be derived from green waste rather than manures. Some composition of well rotted manures is fine. Re: Soil Choices in my area (Which One Please) 3Nov 15, 2011 2:35 pm Fu, Its for a new house. I had to remove a fair bit of the existing soil and debris. The existing soil is clay and I have a lot of area than need to be filled to get my soil to the right height. And sorry I have noticed that I said i can verify that it is organic. It is supposed to read I cannot verify that it is organic. Does this change your mind on your selection now Fu?
