Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 09, 2011 7:31 pm Hi all, I planted Empire Zoysia during May 2011 in the Hunter Valley NSW this year with Seasol and Powerfeed. After 8 weeks of watering and additional treatments of Seasol the little white roots had only started to appear. I have also been overseas for 6 weeks which did not help with getting the lawn established. The roots are now established, however during the winter and my holiday the weeds have taken over fairly severly. From what i can read on Empire Zoysia it suggests it is fairly resistant to chemical herbicides but doesn't mention any particular brands or chemcials. I am looking for some advice on what i should spray to get the weeds under control without damaging the lawn. I have 950m2 of grass so it is a big task ahead of me to get the lawn back in control. Any advice would be appreciated or herbicides that other people have used safely on Empire Zoysia. Regards, Empire Zoysia Weed Help 2Nov 09, 2011 7:37 pm Well before you turn to the dark side of horticulture there's some things that I'd be addressing. The soil is one thing. Hopfully you've read the threads on turf prep here and followed the guides. With out that sort of prep things don't work out so well. Especially for zoysia. The roots have taken far too long to take and that says some things. It's also why the weeds are there. The lawn is weak and so weeds become established easily. Better to fix the problem than treat the symptom. What soil prep was done? Re: Empire Zoysia Weed Help 3Nov 09, 2011 8:35 pm Hi Fu, The landscaper hoed in some gypsum as the soil has clay through it, then he put down the 75mm of top soil. Before he brought the turf in i sprayed the powerfeed and seasol ontop of the top soil. Then another layer of seasol on the day that it was layed. I dont know if the fact that i also had to water the grass at night was an issue, but during the establishment of the lawn i was getting home from work around 7pm so i could only water at night when the temperatures were between 0 and 5 degrees. Is there other soil additives that can help the grass naturally beat the weeds? I am willing to try other options first as i am a little worried about also killing the grass with herbicide. I think the type of weeds I have are winter grass, white clover, cape weed and some broad leaf thistle. Regards, Graham. Empire Zoysia Weed Help 4Nov 09, 2011 8:49 pm That sort of soil prep is a train wreck. No wonder the poor turf is struggling. Have a look at the turf thread. You'll need to do a heap of work on this poor turf to get it to be even half reliable. Spraying the weeds will harm the little soil health there. There is a heap of threads on weed spray with specific info on what and how to use it. The soil is a whole other story.
