By the way, the Buddha was solid stone. Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 23Feb 10, 2008 9:02 pm That looks like a grave to me. All that's needed to finish it off is a little inscription.
I also find all these sorts of things a bit weird. It's like the garden is attempting to say "I'm opulent, sumptuous, reminiscent of ancient splendor", but in reality it's a bit of pretentious tat crammed in a pathetic little plot of grass heavily overlooked by every neighbour. The scale is just wrong. It's damn close to comedy. But fun to look at. Thanks edit: And is that fake grass ? Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 24Feb 10, 2008 9:20 pm When we visited distant family (my mother's second cousin and his wife) at their home in Hope Island a couple of years ago for the first time, ds was impressed by their house.
"I like the fact their kitchen is outside, and near the pool," ds stated. Indeed, ahead of us was a small, retro cottage with an outside kitchen. Lovely outdoor furniture, the lot. However, ds did wonder why the neighbours' house was so HUGE in comparison, as it looked a bit alike. "Sweetie," I replied, "this isn't a little house with an outdoor kitchen. It's their outdoor entertaining area, complete with an indoor one for when it's raining." I kid you not - their house was enormous, being Hope Island, and they had in the "back yard" a double entertainment area, one indoor and one outdoor, serviced by the same kitchen/BBQ area. Full-on surround sound music piped through both areas, as well. What made it so "wow"? The whole thing was the size of a small house! Some people have incredible outdoor areas, and, considering it was just the two of them living at this Hope Island place, I was shocked at the extravagance at this place! Fiona I couldn’t stand all the house work….. Although I guess if you have a house THAT size, you’d have yourself a cleaner. We framed large bamboo panels with 100 x 100 recycled jarrah posts in our last house and turned a fairly unattractive yard into screened and sectioned off planted areas. It made a big difference but I think you have to repeat a theme for it to be cohesive and strike the right cord. However .... I'm still stuck on the hunny with frothy feet . Nice pics P, good work. The scale is just wrong. I think that this is the way the world is moving. Nobody is intrested in a more simple house with better quality. I think it is an extension of the throw away society. Lets face it, on first impressions, mini mansions look better than a well put together house of the same value. When it comes time to sell, you need to have something that will have broad appeal. Certainly it looks pretentious but if you hope to sell one day, the buyer is probably going to look for something pretentious and if you haven't got, then no sale. There are areas where such things are not seen but that is in different neighbourhoods far from the endless new estates. Usualy the problem is the $$$ required to live inone of these areas.
