Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 09, 2008 4:53 pm It has been a while since we've been out to look at display homes, but today we took a drive....AND A PACKED LUNCH.... out to Pakenham...
In one of the homes i noticed a really inviting outdoor area which i just had to take a few pictures of (of course my camera is always ready... ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I just thought it was lovely, nice and bright, the layering of the plants along the fence line, various features which immediately draw the eye to them....very, very nice.... to which i asked my DH: "umm hunny, what about we do something like this with our backyard???" AND GUESS WHAT???? He liked it too!!! Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 2Feb 09, 2008 5:23 pm I like the built in bench in the last photo and the backdrop of high greenery is very appealing. And I think makes it appear to be more garden area than it actually is.
Not sure about the pillars of stackstone, are they just for decoration? And what's with the outdoor bed, what would you use that for?? No, really?? Do you have a big backyard area yourself Phoenix? Helyn, no not a big backyard unfortunately, but i do want to add a few features so that each section of the yard has something that draws your attention.... Yes the stack stone pillars looked like they were more for looks than anything practical.... Personally i can think of a few uses for the daybed..... relaxing with a good book, sunbaking , having a little snooze in the afternoon.... and a few other things perhaps... Hey but that's me, it might not appeal to everyone... Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 4Feb 09, 2008 6:02 pm Nice outdoor space, very practical!
If I had room I’d have one of those beds at my place…..the photo has 2 joined together, filling the space up I guess, so it looks more interesting. I could see myself Sunday afternoons after mowing the lawns with a few drinks and a book! It looks very comfy! I like the space, it looks very inviting. Hey but that's me, it might not appeal to everyone... LOVE the bed .. reminds me of a Balinese spa. Like Michelle, it would be great to lay back in the shade with a warm breeze, glass of vino or champers, good book, ear plugs ... sigh envy. No jarring notes of .... 'mummmmmyyyyyyy where are my BALLLET shoes .... ' <why why why do I always have to find everything in this house> What I really like is the way they have integrated the decking and pavers. A good separation of zones but also connection between the two materials. The pillars bring the colours together. What are the tall trees do you think? Manchurin Pear?? Thanks P for posting this ... very nice. Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 6Feb 09, 2008 6:47 pm Yes, they were Manchurian Pears... very vertical specimens too...sometimes they can grow a bit wide and they don't look as nice (in this sort of application anyway). Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 7Feb 09, 2008 7:13 pm How about these

Helyn, did you say that P - I think it is great - BUT - display homes are designed to sell on emotions - so use them for ideas. Then take that away and practically apply the use of it. I used to have a hammock under the verandah in Darwin - it was my peace in the shade - cool - nice place to go sit and enjoy - whilst still being connected with the family. So I see all outdoor areas as being places for everyone - yet a bit of everything for all. Keep the balance. Steve Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 11Feb 09, 2008 8:57 pm Not sure about the stacked pillars. Bit too much like stonehenge ....
Lots of plants in that garden. Bet it cost a bit. And that day bed is just for show. With no covering it woud be too hot in full sun and get wet if it rains. Helyn, did you say that Yes, it was a serious sensible question. See, I did get some sensible answers: sunbaking, reading etc. Quote: and a few other things perhaps... You'd need the high shrubbery then!! Especially if the neighbours had a 2 story house!! Seriously, I prefer the stackstone in the built in bench and the retaining wall in one of Michelle's pics, I think the decorative pillars are a bit much. Less is more, I suppose Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 15Feb 10, 2008 5:14 pm Hmmm.....can you tell i was a bit bored today????
So we spent the day visiting some of the Mernda display villages to get some ideas on decorating and gardening and alfresco set ups... i took some pics of some of the alfresco areas.... so have a look (if you want to?) and enjoy: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Backyard / Alfresco Ideas 16Feb 10, 2008 5:32 pm Do you think if I was good for the rest of the year I could get a day bed with the hottie included in my Christmas stocking
