Also we already have both sides of the house with a brick fence that extends only partly into the backyard on both sides. The rest of the backyard we need to replace the fence and was considering continuing with the brick wall to make it look consistent. Is this a bad idea with the planting of a tree as I am worried that roots could damage and crack the wall later. How far would the tree need to be from the wall for this to not be an issue. Or should I just use a Colorbond fencing instead? Roots travel far and wide, the most destructive roots are within the first 2-3 metres of the trunk, eg the roots that lift paving etc. Further out the roots are far finer and the damage they usually cause has do with moisture levels in the soil, i.e. the tree roots suck an area dry and the foundations move causing a wall to crack. A rough estimate for a 8m high tree would be an 8m spread of roots from the trunk. The roots will go a lot further out than that but they are unlikely to cause any problems.
