Help with plant ideas - Perth
I'm re-doing our back yard but have NO IDEA what plants to put in. Originally I thought tropical but after some messaging with FU have seen the error of my ways (mostly).
However I still want something that has a sort of tropical feel to it. At the moment the yard has only two bangalow palms (about 5 years old) and two young bananas that I just couldnt resist...........
I've followed FU's advice in regards to soil prep, lots of bentonite, zeolite, perlite, certified organic compost and i've got the go go juice, molasses, blood and bone and seamungus ready to go.
Now I just need some ideas as to plants. I would like to put a frangipani behind the water feature, thats about the only thing i am definate on. The water feature is in the corner, there is another matching stack stone wall with timber slats and water bowl at the other end. The yard faces west south/west so it gets plenty of sun.
This bed on the left is about 1.3 wide and about 12m long, shaded in the late afternoon [img=http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/4797/091km.th.jpg]
The bed on the left is 1.1 m wide and about 10 m long, pretty well full sun. The bed on the right is 1.1 m wide, 6 m long and fairly shaded until late afternoon. It runs along the edge of our raised alfresco area. [img=http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/7616/090tr.th.jpg]
Another couple of photos to give you idea of the yard. I will be putting large pots along the fence line where the bricks are next to the deck and spa.

Never posted links for photos before so I hope it works.
I thought maybe a couple of golden canes one at each end furthest from the water feature and then alternating tiger grass and giant bird of paradise back to the water feature? Then underplanting with something?
If anyone has any ideas for any area of the garden I'd love to hear them.
Thanks
Katash
You could go for plants that kind of have that oasis/wetland feel to them but are a bit more local. Melaleuca, agonis... get some trees in there for a bit of shade if you can! cottonwood hibiscus is popular, returning to the tropical stuff for a moment. fringed lily, pigface, club rush, conostylis? boronia (needs more water I think), teatree? some climbers to go up the fence, perhaps, there's the tropical (jasmines, pandorea, bougainvillea) or the local, forget about the thing and it'll grow like a weed - hardenbergia.
I dunno, the cane/tiger grass/bird of paradise thing seems a bit generic suburban to me. Which there's absolutely nothing wrong with if you just want to get the thing planted and then leave it alone. But with homeone at your back you could go for something more ambitious
Also, go to zanthorrea

I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters. If…
