Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 30, 2011 2:50 pm Hi All, I have just bought a tin of jarrah stain (cabots) to stain my treated pine retaining wall, I opened up the tin, it's very red (fake looking red). I tested a small sample on the inside of the wall and still it seems extremely red. What can I do about this (if anything?) We picked Jarrah as we have a deck made out of Jarrah near by, this isn't even close. If I could someone make it a few shades darker it would probably be fine (i.e. less red and more brown in it) I doubt bunnings will take it back now that is it opened etc. Maybe could I do one coat in this then another coat ontop of a darker colour... I'm not sure what I should do. Any ideas or tips would be great. Also to note it is only about 3 hours since I put the sample on so maybe it will fade some more, I cannot see it doing it at the moment though. I got the water based stain. Re: Jarrah Stain on Treated Pine - Retaining Wall - It's Too 3Oct 01, 2011 2:08 pm If you wanted a brown colour then jarrah stain was the wrong choice, it's always red. Jarrah starts out red and ages to brown. Is this stain suitable for outdoor use? I've used quite a bit of jarrah stain on furniture and it does look very fake until the varnish goes on and gives it some depth but I'm talking furniture grade stain. so an outdoor or decking stain may suit better but if you don't want red don't get it in Jarrah - just match the colour of the deck to the closest stain colour instead. . Re: Jarrah Stain on Treated Pine - Retaining Wall - It's Too 4Oct 01, 2011 9:05 pm Get a test piece and try it out. If its too red get a small pot of another color and put it over the top or get another tp test. Re: Jarrah Stain on Treated Pine - Retaining Wall - It's Too 5Oct 03, 2011 6:14 am We ended up going with it and while I still don't like it the red has dulled down a lot. Am thinking of putting another colour on top. Maybe merbru (spelling??) Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
