Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 29, 2011 9:15 pm We'd like to have a side fence consisting of a small panel (500-600mm) and a 900 wide gate (approx). However, to do this, there must be a mid post to hold the side panel properly. This post would have to be on our concrete path. But, turns out that our fencer won't touch the concrete. They want only 2 posts (either side), so we get one ginormous gate (about 1.4 m clear opening). The gate/post would be hanging off the house wall only , there would be no other support. The fence would be 1.8m high. What are our options? I heard there are 3 ways of installing this mid post: 1. Core drill the path and concrete the post into the hole 2. Made to order - flange welded onto post and all together powder coated, then dynabolt onto path 3. Flange insert (the post slides over this), dynabolt onto path - supposedly not strong enough Are we silly to insist on putting this mid post?? Should we have one giant gate and just hang it off the house wall?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Installing colorbond fence over concrete 2Sep 30, 2011 8:11 am If you really want a mid post then it can be done. I had a situation in the past very similar to yours and was worried about the ability of the dyna bolt to hold securely. In the end I used the longest Dyna bolt I could find, and although initially working I had doubts about it lasting. Within months it had worked loose and become a pain in the butt. The gate was used every day and could not live with the pressures of constant opening and closing. In the end I had to rip it out, cut a large 300mm x 300mm hole in the path and dig into the soil .6 m and concrete the post in. Once I did this I never had a problem. Re: Installing colorbond fence over concrete 3Sep 30, 2011 8:25 pm core drill is the best way IMO I went outside once. The graphics were alright, but the gameplay sucked! That's not good news for us!!! It means we would have to core drill right on the edge of the concrete path (to make some 20-30 cm diameter hole), so the hole would have to be partially in the concrete path and partially adjacent to it! Eyspy, just wondering what was the size of your gate? Ours would not be used every day (just to get the bins out and ocassionally walk there for other reasons) ... Re: Installing colorbond fence over concrete 5Oct 01, 2011 10:19 am we had gates ( admittedly jarrah) at the back of a single carport in our old house. Despite the face that they were very rarily opened we had issues with the top and 2nd screw for the gate post attached to the wall for one of the gates pulling out because of the width/weight of the gate within 18 months. This was with a number of big dyna bolt screws etc into brick.(4 or 5 from memory) the gate would only have been 1.2 or at max 1.4 wide. Prob 1.2 as they were bunnings standard pre built gates. We eventually solved the issue by getting a pro chippy in who was able to fasten it securely and it was still rock solid 17 years later. If you can, go for the central post. Just a question - how did the chippy solve this? Did he still affix the post to the house wall (just the same as you did this originally), but maybe he just used different / new fixings (eg. new dynabolts)? BTW, was this originally a DIY?? I don't l think they were dynabolts. It was so long ago we can't remember. but they were certainly different to what we used which were. We were getting the chippy to do a few inside jobs at the time and we asked him if he could fix this as well. Which he did.
