Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 15, 2011 12:26 pm Ok I need to redo all the garden areas on a 800m2 block. I realise that I have probably missed the right time for planting/ grassing etc..... So I am looking at next year.....so.... am I better off sinking a bore (24m to water - a bit dirty/ staining/ cant use in the pool) or putting in rainwater tanks (can use in pool but the tank may not fill up with rain. and limited supply) I understand that I will need to water a new garden alot (of course I will be doing all the soil preparations!), so am I better of spending the $5000 plus for a bore? or going with rainwater tanks? The current garden is out of control with little to no drainage and just far to time consuming for its unattractiveness. (I spend an hour daily weeding etc.) Any bore recommendations for Perth? Cheers F. Re: Bore versus rainwater tanks? (Perth) 2Sep 15, 2011 2:31 pm Hi, I had a bore at an old house, and fair enough the bore was sunk in the 80's, but it was play up a lot. And getting it fixed was $$$$. Maybe I am scarred from that experience but if you were going to spend $5k, I would look at using a grey water system combined with rain water tank. If you get a big enough tank, (so it doesn't fill halfway through winter), you can feed the grey water into the water tank which then dilutes it. Of course you'll have to use grey water safe products in the home, but I do very easily as they are everywhere now. Also you will get rebates for all this from the water corp. (Perth) 3Sep 15, 2011 6:32 pm Rainwater is not much use for watering gardens. All our rain falls in winter and our gardens don't need it then. The stored water will only last a short few waterings. The scale of water storage would need to be enormous. Go a bore but first check and research if there are toxic bores near by. Better still, see if sharing a bore with neighbours will be possible. Then multiple people can help fund the bore. Bore versus rainwater tanks? (Perth) 4Sep 15, 2011 6:35 pm Rain water tanks how ever are very good for plumbing into the home utilities like the dunny and the washing machine. That is worthwhile and useful for reducing your water use from scheme water. You may even be able to top up the tanks from a good bore further reducing your water bill. That was always going to be a challenge and a test of patience. Full marks to your mate.
