I am wanting to create an Indian inspired back garden, I have only a small area - most of which is taken up by an alfresco. I have a 10 x 3.5m garden and the alfresco takes up some of it already. Does anyone have any design ideas to maximise space or certain plants to use? I was thinking perhaps a frangipani tree (even though this is more balinese then indian)
I am after a relaxing feel and lots of colour is important to me. I was originally thinking of doing a native garden but I just dont really like the feel of them - they don't look relaxing to me but rather make me feel like I am roughing it in the bush. But I wouldn't mind incorporating some in if thats possible.

Im thinking central fountain and also a shallow rectangular pool with water plants and reeds. some tropical water lilies. hibiscus trees on boundries, maybe lantana, although roots could be a problem

You could certainly achieve a colourful look with natives, if you choose carefully. A bit of research before making any decisions on plants can save on costly mistakes. Check out websites, gardening magazines and books for ideas. This one looks useful:

Ben888 ours must be very different, we have a 1.6m fall - was filled in to build our house up. 20cm step is not a huge thing at all we have 7 steps down from alfresco…
