We have a driveway next to the garage so we can park our caravan at the back of the house. We have double wrought iron gates with shade cloth fitted to stop the wind.We have now decided to swap the cloth for sheets of plywood which we will paint so when people go past it looks as though they are looking through the gates into a garden. Topiarius Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 3Aug 21, 2011 9:19 pm Have a narrow bed with a hedge. Why? The more area of a home that is a hard, dark or synthetic surface, the greater the energy costs and impact it will have on future budgets as well as urban environmental impact. This may seem not so important right now but we are on the cusp of seeing dramatic changes in the way we approach urban landscapes and development. This quite separate to current political issues. From an aesthetic point of view you always need to soften a hard surface with something. This will balance the picture you present to the street. (yes there are exceptions to this but are far fewer than not) In this case make it a hedge. Who knows, food prices may grow enough to warrant that extra space be used to grow veggies as well in the near future. I would not suggest lawn to be a valid surface. It will be impractical and a nuisance to maintain. An alternative would be a sparse planting of Lomandra Little Con. Then as the years go on dig them up and divide them and replant. Eventually creating a dense meddow look. This is a feature I would really set the challenge to many of you to establish instead of a traditional lawn. This way you will A. Have a creation unique in the street B. Still have a soft lawn type look with a twist. C. Have a truly waterwise option. D. End up creating the very reason that is hidden deep in urban landscapes. That being a mimic of the open plains of the American Midwest. Yes that is where our urban design has its roots. Not in lawns used like those in European gardens. In the overall end a far better and effective result. *Lomandra Little Con is just one example of what could be many other plants up for the job of imitating a lawn area. I have never thought of it that way so thank you for opening my eyes. How wide is your narrow hedge strip? Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 5Aug 21, 2011 9:25 pm Also, how easy or difficult is it for you to trim your hedge without damaging the fence it's against? How wide is your narrow hedge strip? That's a bit personal!! ...we don't have one due to the surrounding landscape. Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 7Aug 21, 2011 9:44 pm Our garage is on the boundary but we have no fence - driveway just adjoins neighbours - there was a narrow, maybe a foot wide, area between driveway and neighbours property - (driveway was supplied as part of house/land package so we didnt actually choose to have this strip) while I was thinking what to do with this, the neighbour's landscaper put pebbles in their front yard and extended it to our driveway - I pointed out that a foot of the pebbles was on our property and they said we hope you dont mind, will remove it if you dont want it - seemed sensible to leave it there than have silly looking different strip (when there is no fence) so thats what we did Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 8Aug 21, 2011 10:33 pm Helyn Our garage is on the boundary but we have no fence - driveway just adjoins neighbours - there was a narrow, maybe a foot wide, area between driveway and neighbours property - (driveway was supplied as part of house/land package so we didnt actually choose to have this strip) while I was thinking what to do with this, the neighbour's landscaper put pebbles in their front yard and extended it to our driveway - I pointed out that a foot of the pebbles was on our property and they said we hope you dont mind, will remove it if you dont want it - seemed sensible to leave it there than have silly looking different strip (when there is no fence) so thats what we did I spoke with my neighbour and this is what I am/we are going to do also. I decided that if I had friends visit and park on the driveway, I didn't want them open a car door against a garden/hedge and nor do I want them trampling it while getting out of their car. To my mind, pebbles was the simple solution. Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 9Aug 21, 2011 11:09 pm How wide is your driveway huggy? Re: What's between your garage door and fence? 11Aug 25, 2011 12:35 am Huggy, I'd chuck in some organic compost and some bentonite clay maybe some rock minerals. Get some tubestock Grevillea Gin Gin Gem and there is an idea for that spot. Just mow it with a mower every now and then. Some Casurina CousinIt's would look good there too along with a few Acacia mini cogs or similar. 2 7438 Dover white or surfmist garage door. I am having trouble choosing a garage door.
