Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 13, 2011 11:16 pm Hi everyone! I hope I'm allowed to ask for some ideas here? Our house is due to be completed in a couple of months, and we will be sorting all of our landscaping. Does anyone have low maintenance pond ideas? Im talking about a small pond, maybe a few goldfish... with surrounding easy to care for shrubs etc. I am looking to either have this outside our theatre or near our outside entertaining area. Not quite sure yet! But yes, any ideas, suggestions, way to cuts costs, pictures would be greatly appreciated! I do have a fish tank, which i have had for over 4 years with the same fish, so i will clean the pond etc... I just want some tips on setting it up and integrating it with some nice plants Thanks! Use only native fish species, a mix of fine gravel and zeolite as a bedding mixture. Shallow and deep parts with reeds and native aquatic plants around it. It will take care of itself and need no powered filtration. A vfew logs also for habitat. I still need to do a write up on this for you guys. When done well will form an integral feature that everyone will love in any landscpae formal or informal. Re: Landscaping with a pond - ideas 3Aug 14, 2011 12:43 am Thanks, that sounds really good! No powered filtration would be nice. What exactly are considered Native fish, and are there any small fish? I always use Native WA Pygmy Perch. Over East your Pygmy perch are endangered but they may still be available. You only want very small fish. In fact you may never see them in there but their role is not as a visual pleasure but as a practical inclusion. They will eat insect larvae such as mozzies and keep the problem down while your neighbours are spraying them selves with chemicals. You woin't need to feed them, they will fend for themselves fine, even in small ponds. You need to accept algae. It is a very important part of a pond or billabong. Its normal. Tadpoles need it for a food source. You get a build up through the year, the taddies come along and eat it, leave the billabong, the algae builds again and the cycle continues. You will get problems with containers that warm though, you get algae that is not so easy to control but the fish eat it and I just scoop it out when there's too much. Mini Billabongs in ground will keep nice and cool. The soil will stabilise the temps. Make them about 600mm deep if possible. This gives you at least 100-300mm of bedding space. as in you can them have 100-300-mm of gravel and zeolite as a soil. Have lots of plants, the more you have the healthier the system will be. I love the shot in a local retic shop of a talented designer who has a big billabong as a swimming pool. Fish and all. Check out the work of Phillip Johnson as well for ideas I have lots of pots we use as well, filled with water and plants. I have big plastic containers dropped into the ground as some ponds and one mini billabong. All forms work very well. They all have zeolite and gravel in them and lots of native plants. I recently finished my house and after landscaping, have begun to plan a fence. To be honest its been a bit of an afterthought so I'm after some much needed advice. The… 0 2012 Hmmm, I have checked your past posts and it seems that you are in NSW, not WA as I had thought. It pays to show your State in your avatar.
