Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 11, 2011 1:29 pm Looking for Sir Walter fertilizer with a "built-in" pre-emergent. I heard it does exist, but where?!?! In fact, I think it may be packaged in large plastic bags that are predominantly light-ish blue in colour, very similar to this pic Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ (but not sure if that's what I'm looking for). Google only shows these buckets, nothing similar in bags. Oh, this is used before laying the turf (but I guess it can also be used later on). It could be either a Scotts brand or Martin's, not sure. Again, I get nothing via Google. Anyone heard of it??? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 2Aug 11, 2011 8:38 pm lex, there is a whole stack of things written on a platter for what you really need to do for laying turf in the stickies. I am very aware of these sorts of products. Buffaloes need no special fertilisers and no special treatment and there is a growing number of products having you believe so. I prefer to see Homeone members discover how well a lawn becomes with my info and no fertilisers. I am by no means alone in this way of thinking either and its shared by some very well respected turf mangers. Never feed the plant, always feed the soil. A very old adage in gardening that has been long forgotten. Fertilisers do not feed soils. Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 3Aug 11, 2011 10:45 pm Thanks Fu. You know that I agree with your and h1 turfing philosophy, I actually used Olsens's today on one area, hopefully we'll have some rain soon to help it dissolve in. We have cut the site pretty deep and now we have the deep clays exposed and I need to treat the soil as good as I can (considering the effort, timeframe I have, etc.). When it comes the time to get some underlay in, I will try to get the good stuff. BUT, I am really worried about the weed seeds, and would like to try the all-in-one product that I was talking about. Why fertiliser? Well, it just comes pre-attached to the pre-emergent I guess ... and so that I don't overdo it (because I would only use the slightest amount of fertiliser) So, any chance that someone knows of such product?? Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 4Aug 12, 2011 12:29 pm Pre-emergents are not generally available to the average homeowner in oz Lex, thats why you can't find it. You need someone with a chem users certification like a lawn "professional" to buy and/or apply it. Also do you understand the limitations of a pre-emergent and how it works Lex? i.e. its useless against bulb and corm based weeds like oxalis and onion weed. Its pretty over the top if you are laying full turf rolls on the soil, good though if you are planting out sprigs and runners to keep the weeds down. Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 5Aug 12, 2011 7:39 pm Also i will add there is zero point putting a pre-emergent down then putting soil "underlay" on top of it. The pre-emergent works on the soil surface where the weed seeds germinate. Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 6Aug 12, 2011 7:47 pm I'll post a picture of grass over the weekend-less than 12mths old. Re: Sir Walter fertilizer with pre-emergent 7Aug 12, 2011 10:55 pm Thanks, BK. Yes, the little bit that I read about it, it does seem like it's fairly restricted in availability and also in target seeds. Even found one so-called organic, but it's not "permitted" for sale in Oz. Yep, it needs to go on top of underlay (like the fertiliser it's mixed into), not under the underlay, it's too deep. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
