Re: Compost bins - What do you have? 22Aug 16, 2011 4:57 pm Yes, worm wee is fantastic for plants that are stressed, or if you just need healthier free fertilizer for your garden. We collect in a watering can and then just water whatever we think needs a boost. I am sure my worms were "mating" I lifted up one of the levels to check on them and lets just say there were a few that seemed to be "joined" together.... keep on multiplying worms...!!!! I am trying to get my worms to move up to a new tray. one tray is now full of worm compost and worms. So I have started to put food scraps into the next tray and they are coming up through the holes to eat it, so I hope in time they will progress to my next tray so I can use the worm compost on my pot plants... Lex - I love the idea of them rolling around and munching around... I never get any smells from my worm farm which is good, sometime I get the little white crawlies but I just use a worm conditioner and also put some bread in which seems to help. I avoid chunks of meat, citrus and onions, however food scrapings from our plates that have meat or onions cooked do go to the worms. Re: Compost bins - What do you have? 23Aug 16, 2011 5:07 pm Lex, maybe your friend had earthworms? Mine are Red Composting Worms although I suspect they have been crossed with Tiger Worms as they are very stripey. http://www.squidoo.com/worm-composting- ... earthworms You don't have to buy a worm farm, there are instructions on the net for making your own from a polystyrene cauliflower box (or similar)....should try it!! Re: Compost bins - What do you have? 24Aug 16, 2011 8:23 pm Ooops, for me these were all the same worms - and I meant (I think ) earthworms ... Obviously, I need some education in the worm world ... never thought that there would be some special worms for farming and garden work My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... One is compost heater as per http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jm-c9B2_ew Utilising one of these - http://www.enviro-friendly.com/corrugat ... beds.shtml Which cooks the biomass and a pump runs a hot water feed under the house where I slow it down in large diameter pipes. That heat then transfers into the house. After the compost has cooked I transfer it to another raised tank, this time to polish the compost so I can sell it. Heating for free for around 6 weeks a load. I will be using grass, hedge clippings, garden clippings and 3 bags $21 worth of wood shavings. Works for Mallee fowl. Re: Compost bins - What do you have? 29Aug 26, 2011 1:12 pm When you get these sorts of beds, make sure they are one piece and have rolled edges on the top. There are plenty out there that are not like that and have some very sharp or dangerous/hazardous corners. Even if they have a soft edging that fits on they rarely stay put. I desperately want to get the kids a worm farm but the worms make me squirm... I am looking at a worm cafe... I just need the balls to get it & the worms! Do it!! We've had a worm farm for a couple of years and I love it. Although the cooler temperatures up here have affected productivity of the worms over the last few months. Next stop is chickens to help the worms, we produce a LOT of kitchen scraps. What can I say - I like to cook! I am looking at a worm cafe... I just need the balls to get it & the worms! I bought and set up worm cafe today. worm cafe seems pretty well built and has 3 working tray and was further reduced for 88 at Big green Shed. I thought of worm farm as messy job and was not willing to handle them. My wife was like you guys scared and disgusted about worms. I promised her to keep the worm farm away from her and i would take care all of it.now when she looked at the set up she cant even see a single worm out side and maintenance is pretty much zero. She does not mind it now and appreciates what they do for recycling organic wastes and wants to be a part of it.I reckon go and get it. I have a question for experienced worm farmers if you don't mind Lex. I have kept the worm farm in the corner of north west of the fence. There will be shade all day. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Do i need some sort of roof for this to protect from rain? There are some tiny holes on top and sides but not sure water going though them during rain is a problem. I know i have to keep the trays moist, and i am also planing to keep the tap always open therefore no chances of flooding. What do you guys think?
