Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 08, 2011 8:13 pm Hi, Here is a picture of the retaining wall Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are wondering what we can grow in it. This is our very first house and we are beginner gardeners. The width or area from fence to wall sleeper is around 125-150mm. That area is the north side of our house and because of the fence will receive very little light. What we would like to know is what plants would do well in there. We will be having a pool in the future and want to make sure the plants also hold up to salt water splashes. Any suggestions and ideas would be great. We want to break up the timber look. Cheers Re: What to plant on top of retaining wall? Not much sun 2Aug 08, 2011 10:37 pm Get the soil right before you even contemplate the plants. Perlite, spongolite, zeolite as well as certified organic compost. Nothing more or less really and what ever you plant in there will not only grow but reduce the costs associated with the garden into the foreseeable future. They will break the clays and make them a soil. Raw uncomposted mulch. Someone mentioned earlier about Viburnum Emerald Lustre, they look a treat along there and will handle the conditions easily. They do burn when small but will grow well anyway. My fav, Melaleuca nesophila, or Grevillea olivacea. Fast and cheap and easy. Where's the house located? (City?) Good spot to grow a bunch of veggies in under the plants too. I'd also try some Kangapaws in there as the garden establishes. I've had good success with Casurina cousin it in similar spots. That will cascade over the wall if you plant a few dotted along. What to plant on top of retaining wall? Not much sun 3Aug 08, 2011 10:45 pm Fu we are in Geelong, Vic. Re: What to plant on top of retaining wall? Not much sun 6Aug 11, 2011 11:35 am Steve, I am going to be in the same situation with a narrow retaining wall, after looking at everyones gardens on here, Bamboo seems to be very popular atm and I liked the idea of the height as it would screen the timber fence as well, just another thought/option. Dont know if it would be too envasive with roots etc, would have to check this out. Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011.
