Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 07, 2011 5:30 pm Has anyone ever done this? There is so much stone/gravel here (Perth hills) that I think all I could do would be pick up or rake out the larger pieces from the surface. Then I could buy in some compost but rotary hoeing it in would just turn out a lot more gravelly stone or damage the hoe. Any ideas on how to proceed would be really appreciated! Re: How do I prepare gravelly ground for a lawn? 2Aug 07, 2011 6:04 pm Check out the 'sticky' threads at the top of the landscape forum. Fu has given some excellent advice in these. Good luck! Re: How do I prepare gravelly ground for a lawn? 3Aug 07, 2011 6:38 pm We are on a combo of a small amount of builders sand over rock and gravel. We bought in a good number of cubic m of decent organic soil improver. Spread it out. Rotary hoed it. Picking up any medium and larger rocks etc. ( only big ones for the garden area /left the rest) Added zeolite and spongolite. Rotary hoed it more and leveled it as best we could before getting roll on Empire Zoysia laid. Followed Fu's "prep" and "after laying" recommendations. We've chosen only to garden a small section of our place ( we are on 3.4 of an acre) in a more traditional garden at the front in front of the house. The rest will have/is gradually getting plantings of hardy things are we gradually dig / crowbar to plant. Mostly using tube stock so we don't have to dig too much. Saves money and backs. Our variation of traditional means we have a patch of lawn surrounded on all four sides with garden beds. However those garden beds include veggies, native and non native plants and trees. On the rest of the property. we have natives scattered amongst 4 marri trees in a small section of the block that is in a semi original state. ( measure about 6 m2), silver birches, native plants growing to be hedges across the back and one side and a growing collection of fruit trees.
